US firm Squire Sanders is looking to spread itself further in Australia, with a Sydney or Melbourne office in the pipeline.

Squire Sanders entered the Australian market with a bang last August, poaching 15 lawyers from Minter Ellison's Perth office. Minter Ellison had to regroup quickly after being left with just four lonely partners. And now the American giant is looking to opening an east coast office before the end of the year. The firm's Perth managing partner, Duncan McClean, says that both Sydney and Melbourne are in the mix. Although he told Lawyers Weekly "I would tend to favour the acquisition of an existing presence in Sydney."

It has been reported that the firm has already been in discussions with several national firms and rumours are doing the rounds that it is now focussing on Middletons. If Squire Sanders' past form is anything to go by, Sydney-based law firms would do well to keep an eye on their partners for the next few months.
