Heh I can see some of the younger partners across the law world suddenly suggesting to some doddering old equity geezer they’ve been trying to get rid of for years that now would be the perfect time to do a bit of networking.
It all seems a bit daft, but no more ridiculous than ethnic quotas or most f the "social mobility" drivel they come up with. I don't get the anger around this issue.
A law firm denying clients? I don't believe it. Also: how do they define transphobia. Also: what's the vetting process? Why have a trans speaker at all events? How many trans people do they employ and are they the best people? I'd hate to be one of the (no doubt few) trans people working there. Looks like some people have completely lost the plot.
It's probably not that they forgot McCarthyisim, more likely they remember how everyone pandered to Southern racists as 'good people' at the time, when it's now obvious what bigoted scum they were, and decided not to allow it on their watch. Good on them.
Like, imagine how embarrassing. "Yeah cheers clergs this nose ringed person came down to reception and told me I had to pass a test on Owen Jones before they'd take my retainer".
So the original allegation you agree was emphatically denied but because you can’t have a go at them about that you now strawman (yes I’ve started using it as a verb) some mostly irrelevant toss about a transperson speaking at an event.
Honesty big whoop. My cup of care overfloweth not one drop.
Yes OD. Along with Phil Shiner of Public Interest Lawyers. The dignity and human rights of British soldiers and their families didn’t register in the obscene rush to get their noses into the trough there. No fooks given for the very real destruction of lives.
So they’ll fit the trans rights movement perfectly.
I am tempted to ring up LD about some fictional matter.
I will string them a long for a bit and then offer to put £50k on account to get the ball rolling. But just before I do this I will make some comment about how trans women aren't women.
Is it really harder than the manifold other ways in which people feel uncomfortable and different and anxious and sad? I don't think it is. I think it's just another flavour of why being alive sucks ass.
Nah come on, imagine you’re stuck in the wrong body. I know a shrink who now got to specialize in trans business, preparing people for the operation. There is more and more of them apaz, including women who wish to be men. We really should do some research why the trans numbers are increasing. I blame plastic particles in the ecological cycles with hormonal effects
This is silliness. Goes well beyond the appropriate level of virtue signalling that law firms should do to suggest they aren’t faceless corporate bastards.
Just pick a firm charity and do a few bake sales and enter 4 people in the local half-marathon.
There’s been creep from what transsexuals used to (and tbf in many cases I’m sure still) say: ‘I feel like I was born in the wrong body’ to what the transgender rights activists now say: ‘I was born in the wrong body’. Feeling is now (false) Fact, and it has caused a right mess.
I wasn't joking about the brain thing. It's one of the reasons I have no time for the LITERALLY DYING rhetoric. Activists seem to have no idea that hey guess what everyone's got problems and sources of profound discomfort. This isn't special. Nobody is special. Sorry to break it to ya.
Do you have stats on that Clergs? Most transsexuals I know definitely have had surgery, but that was in the days when transsexual meant that someone felt like they'd been born in the wrong body and going through with surgery was the only way they could accept themselves.

there's a distinction between transsexuals and transgender tho, orwell
the stats aren't mine they are from stonewall and others and I think they are basically impossible to verify given the nature of modern trans rhetoric (i.e. if you say you are non-binary then you are counted - non-binary is just not being a giant stereotype as far as I can see tho ofc thinking that means that Leigh Day will never take my filthy terfy business)
Well to be specific self ID isn't actually law yet, but virtually every council, police force, charity and large corporate in the U.K. is already acting like it is.
Well to be specific self ID isn't actually law yet, but virtually every council, police force, charity and large corporate in the U.K. is already acting like it is.
Which is terrifying. Perhaps people like Dux would see what the fuss was if he wasn't allowed to disagree with Remainers in a similar fashion.
"Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois."
Basically, a lot of these are kids who dye their hair purple and I don't think we should be prioritising their 'needs' above, say, those of the disabled.
FFS. This isn’t hard. If you feel you’re in the wrong body you have a mental disorder. Reality doesn’t adjust to accommodate that.
Obv we treat people with sensitivity and dignity but we don’t go about ramming drugs down pre teen children cos of some people’s speshul feelz.
It's good to recognise LGBT rights, especially as the T (and B) are subject to discrimination even within the LGBT community. The question is not the idea of promoting trans rights itself, but rather the approach to the issue. Attaching 'phobic' label to someone should not be done lightly, especially as it raises libel isues.
As for Leigh Day itself, one is an LD person or not. This firm arguably hates the 'establishment' and was more than willing to make vexacious claims against British soldiers on behalf of Iraqi insurgents, and then Phil Shyster of Shysters was exposed for the dodgy rat that he was. Wish LD had gone under also.
Don donut. Glad someone is doing their research. NVTL, transgender is different from transexual and I think the RoF news story is about phobia directed trans-sexuals.
Re gyms, I think that Virgin Active allows people to go into the changing room of the gender they identify as. I saw Duncan Bannatyne saying on Twitter recently that his gyms don’t allow this. Not sure about others but I suspect Virgin is one of the few that allows it.
Thuggy: Yes LD and Phil Shyster are shyster lawyers, but one should not equate their vexacious claims against the Army with advocating tans rights. they are separate issues.
Incidentally, a number of City law firms are recognised as stonewall diversity/ LGBT champions. Are they shysters too? It seems Stonewall now make it a requirement to have policies that are more inclusive to trans people.
Stonewall has redefined what gay or lesbian means, without actually speaking to those communities to see if they are comfortable with that. They have lost their credibility as a promoter of equal rights.
Stonewall are utter grifters. (As are most of the trans activist bunch for that matter.)
They have become a solution in need of a problem now that gay rights have happily become a largely “solved” problem (by which I don’t mean there is no longer discrimination against gay people but that the bigotry is no longer mainstream and is confined largely to the same types who are racists.)
And ofc there’s no money in championing gay rights in Uganda. So onto the trans they have moved.

This is what happens when all the partners are too young and hinterlandless to recall McCarthyism.

There can't be many partners knocking about who can recall McCarthyism tbf. Weil have a couple of guys in their 90s I spose (or at least did)

How will they make the assessment?
0
4
They could do it by multiple choice for new clients like the new SQE1 exam
1. Are you prepared to say someone is female when they have not changed gender under the law?
2. What do you call someone with XX chromosomes?
3. Write the distinction between sex and gender discrimination? Which set of figures might you collect on a survey on people's sex or on their gender?
4. If 90% of our partners changed gender by law from male to female and 10% were already female are we 100% a female partnership?

I assume look at their twitter and see if they have ever tweeted "tbh I don't think people with penises can be women" or anything insane like that.

Have to say, have never recommended Leigh Day for a tax non panel piece of work but now double will not.

There is no such thing as being "stuck in the wrong body". Are you some kind of Cartesian dualist or something? You are your body.
it's a kin to people feeling disassociated from their limbs. We don't amputate healthy limbs because people are convinced they don't belong to them.

They don't tho. Very very few trans people - particularly trans women (male bodied) have undergone any kind of surgery to their genitalia.
this is one of many many misconceptions at play here

most don't get surgery at all
they just insist they are not what their body suggests and that we all have to agree to avoid them experiencing psychological discomfort

There was a case recently where some bloke self-identified as a female and went on to commit sex offences in an all-female prison.

Stonewall definition of transgender:
"Trans people may describe themselves using one or more of a wide variety of terms, including (but not limited to) transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois."
