Laz I have some Shimano double sided spd/flat pedals that do a great job. Mind you, on the e-bike I installed a set of big mtb flats as the pedals it came with were slippery in wet conditions.
Shamelessly hijacking this thread to say I did a pretend solo Ironman yesterday and am physically and mentally ruined. Pretend because I did the swim in the pool and run on a treadmill. Made the cutoff times. Total time 14 hours 40 minutes. 9600 calories burned. Currently having a burger for breakfast. Never doing that again.
Why would you do a pretend one if you're not training for a real one? Though arguably it's not gr8 prep for one. Don't say to say I done one, because pool and treadmill most definitely don't count. Good effort though. My actual IM took me 14h25m so I can empathise with the shift.
I'd say you'd find a real one easier now. They are not meant to be pleasant, you're now in no doubt about that. Ultimately they are about mental toughness and doing it in a pool/treadmill is mentally harder than with other competitors and crowd etc. Just pick an "easy" one and avoid sea swims.
I’m thinking of buying a Specialized hybrid, partially because I like the oxymoronic branding but also because when our riding with the kids I’d prefer something that allows a head up stance, I’d quite like to have secondary brake handles fitted on the ribble racer so that when I get tired of the drop handlebar position I can sit up but still actually use the brakes. Did I mention it’s got a kickstand too? Oh but the extra weight the extra weight give over sun I weigh thirteen and a half stone, if I don’t have a shit for 24h I retain more weight than the kickstand adds.
Kickstand! I don’t think I’ve thought I’ve needed to park my bike upright since I was 9.
As well as non-cleat pedals and a kick-stand are you going to put those tags that used to tie bread loaf packets at the top in your spokes to finish off the look, or will you add a ding-ding 🔔 to your handlebars too? Shopping basket on the back maybe? I’m sure Ribble would oblige

It rather depends: for longer audaxes (i.e. over 400 and over) I stick Restrap (https://restrap.com) on the Domane. But then audaxes are full of the middle bit of the Venn diagram of beards, middle-aged blokes, bike-lovers and CAMRA. And they all used Carradice.

Need to swap the pedals out for normal platform ones. Leisure riding in cleats is for show ponies.

Have a look at YKYWbike attire. Yes it's a mouthful (as the barrister said to the shopgirl) of a brand name but I can attest to quality and fit.

Where does all this bike interest come from?
If we go back 20 years, I don't recall people talking about high-end road bikes or aspiring to own them
So this is a relatively new thing

I think I would lose the will to live running that far on a treadmill. Thought a mate of mine was barking when he ran a marathon on a track.

Yep defo don’t count fully aware of that. I thought I might do a real one and didn’t want to fail publicly. I now know I couldn’t do a real one.

14 hr 25 is good for a first iron man.
My first was 13hr 56 so can empathise with the amount of effort yours would have taken.

as a great bike blog I once read said: not having a kickstand is fine for purists provided they’re the kind of purist who likes bikes falling over

No I won’t do any of that. who on earth puts a luggage rack on a racing bike!
But, absolutely every time I park my bike I want to park it upright.
I’d like a proper touring bike with panniers tho for a different type of riding ofc
See you on York Hill
