O GOD I AM WEARING THIS
was sitting at breakfast looking around thinking huh the men are all so smart and the women all look like their holiday cover nannies and then I paused to consider my own flaws and ooft
Going to have to make effort
God but it's so much effort

The cardi DOES have a hood
That's cooler right?

It's not so much the age, it's the worn downness of the aesthetic. Anyone can be hot.
Carol Vorderman went too far obviously.

I sympathise. I have entered my middle aged dad era - perma-chinos and oxford collars.

literally just put on chinos / shirt / blue jacket combo as i have a casual work event later and this feels like dressing down! My workplace is fairly formal. I will be wearing a suit and tie tomorrow.

A 1920s style silk chiffon thing might be nice. Swap the cardigan for a fur pelisse. some riding boots. Avoid hats at this stage.

My colleagues wear scrubs but that just doesn’t feel right to me when we spend most of our time sitting in an office.

High five my fellow beiges!
Although I think chinos are hotter than cardis.

M and S stretch fit chinos are just sooooooo comfortable. The struggle is real

ok maybe not those chinos

About 70% of hotness is confidence anyway.

Jeans and a polo shirt

eeyore - totally agree
but it's hard to convey swagger in a John Lewis 70% viscose knit

Ugh no mumsy dresses or cardigans will ever enter my wardrobe. It’s all about the leggings, boyfriend hoodies and hot pink fluffy socks.

It's quite hard to buy non mumsy dresses tbf. Esp if you don't want above the knee

Time to break out the dungarees.
0
1
I really loathe quirky dungarees
they go inextricably with a fck the tories necklace
2
2
I stick to above the knee. Today I'm in a miniskirt, but opaque tights as a nod towards professionalism. I'm really tall so its probably knee length on more normal folk.
I'm in tech, the rest of the room will be men in jeans and trainers. Wear what you feel confident in.

I think mini is fine until c.40 and then after that you either go longer or accept a certain number of young men mistaking you for age appropriate from behind then coming to the front and swooning with horror at their mistake. Or, as my friend's mum puts it, the Don't Look Now effect.

sienna miller cheekbones mean that the dress / cardi still works

I am in what I call my Italian mafia widow dress.
Black velvet with a long zip at the front and a cleavage hinting v neck.

That actually sounds very good, Judo

M&S chinos

aka the centrist dad ‘drobe
goes well with a Skoda and a lingering sense that your pension isn’t as large as it should be…

I haven’t dressed yet. I am in fat face pyjamas and a white company robe with a hood which is up as a bit cold. About to do some yoga. Less is more as you get older I think.
0
2
What do the centrist dads wear on their feet? I am having this dilemma as a new pair of (Charles Tyrwhitt) chinos don't look right with my euro issue/slightly hipster smart trainers.

The OP sounds ace. Ideally a pink or lemon coloured cardy.

And pearls obvs.

I've paired my m&s dark stone chinos with some slightly paint spattered grey skechers. Heading to the post office soon, will be fighting them off with a shitty stick.

Me Im Counting
I typically wear a Converse chucks or some Vans with my chinos.

My corporate uniform is cigarette pants, Russell and brom loafers and a fitted top - either shirt, knitted t.
0
1
OB-ers, where do you get your cigarette pants from? I like a nice trew.
2
2
Zara for my new black ones, m and s for a subtle charcoal grey / black houndstooth and my others are navy from banana republic in about 2014 but they still look brand new and the fit is amazing
I have a strict colour palate of monochrome only really and that keeps it fresh / classic and grey corporate sales woman enough for me to not get in a pickle

Capsule wardrobe basically but one specifically for middle aged corporate

Theory is fkn brilliant for that approach OB

I personally like trousers in a Prince of Wales check.
My current fave pair of trousers are from Bennetton - super comfy and slimming. I wish that I had bought more than one pair.

"slimming" is such a Jilly Cooper / 1970s secretary eating cottage cheese kind of word. love it.

I am quite old fashioned tho.

I should also start referring to those trousers as "slacks" as per my granny.

Clerg- define Mumsy Dresses - do you mean maxi dresses? What waistage?
For dresses/ work I'm still doing skater dresses/ shift dressed with tights and heels, same as I wore 15 years ago. In my 20s/ 30s I did years of black bootcut trousers and high heeled boots and a fitted jumper for work as none of the chains did clothes small enough to fit. Then I embraced fitted dresses/ short skirts and it's so much easier.
The kilt/ black tights/ nice heels and a fitted top/ jumper look for winter never goes out of fashion IMO and this is my MO for the next few months!

I love cigarette pants on others but find them hard to get a good fit so skinny black jeans are my equivalent.
2

All the milfs in my endz have only two looks: 1. Yoga pants 2. Frumpy floral dress with white trainers. Both are horrific.

I see a lot of that twot, it’s the Muswell Hill mum look to a t 😂

the young birds round here (and a few milfs) all seem to be wearing very high waisted “spray on look” black yoga pants - when did cameltoe get so fashionable?

you know whats totally unacceptable? floral dresses and white trainers. Just fook off now please.

What about blue trainers?

marginally better

Ahem, Clerg - Mumsy Dresses definition pls..!
2

I think Clerg's Mumsy look above is for tall ladies only. If I wore a long flowery dress and white trainers I'd look like a short floral tent!

I wear Chelsea boots with my chinos.

Finish with an M&S cashmere sweater for the ultimate in bad-boy sex appeal.

FYI - 40 plus is totally age appropriate for a lot of young men. If the young bucks in my office are anything to go by.

That takes me back.. saw a guy get a knife through his foot once in school and his biggest concern was that his Chelsea boots cost £200 and now had a hole in them.

40 is the new 30 imo

and 50 is the new 40

I don’t do floral. Im too old to carry it off. Judy’s outfit sounds great as do cigarette pants or kilts. Sadly still got my steroid weight so as I’m tall I definitely look for slimming shades. And I’ve got cottage cheese in the fridge. You can tell when I grew up!

I need to start being bothered with trousers again, has been ages.

I don't have any on my current circulation other than skinny jeans. Can't bring myself to go back to boot cuts! Also don't do the super wide baggy ones that the kids are wearing with their biker boots..

I actually need to get some (non mumsy) new clothes for going out - I'll have a browse ce soir and consult the Roferatti..

Florals are for summer only. Winter Smart casual I am opting for uniform very simple and good quality. Good shoes or boots which make my legs look long, well not short, dark knee length pencil skirt or A line. White t shirt, shirt or thin jumper. Decent coat or Mac. Good bag/back pack. That’s it.

The word "mumsy" is used on this thread like it's a bad thing.

For the gents in chinos who have strayed onto the thread, you may find this helpful.
" .. The total inventory of Gainsbourg’s wardrobe could fit in a small suitcase: five shirts, a few T-shirts, slashed to be worn underneath a blazer so he might look bare-chested, one perfecto biker’s jacket, one peacoat, and 20 pairs of the aforementioned “Zizi” shoes."
No trousers, evidently.

High waisted pants are such a barrier to decent foreplay.

I read last night that Peplum is Back In. I took my old Peplum thigns to a charity shop as they were old but I'm going to restocl as I LOVE Peplum tops with skinny jeans! I'll also be hunting down a scarlett dress ready for party season.
BTW It's MM - decided I needed a rebrand and the spinster connotations of the name were attacking my karma and conflicting with my manifestations!

40s are really not too old for miniskirts, you just need better legs.
Today I'm in a minidress which is woollen and vintage 60s. WFH so only I get to appreciate it, and leggings under for warmth, but still.
