Once in the spring when changing from Aga to electric kettle and again in autumn vicey versey. Once in between for each kettle if necessary. So, four times a year max.
If you're not bothered about chemicals then the descaler sachets from Robert Dyas are good. I don't want them so use lemon halves - boil them up then scrub the spout with the halves.
What a fkin coincidence - I have literally just say down after descaling my kettle. I would actually put it down as my favourite household job. Incredibly low effort but exceptionally satisfying when you see all the limescale peeling away.
I might give the lemon thing a try next time. Does it really work? You just cut the lemon in half, dunk it in the water in the kettle, and press the button?
i found myself watching daytime TV a couple of weeks ago and there was a piece on household cleaning tips. most of it was the usual "i clean my grouting with my special brew of bicarbonate of soda mixed with my own urine" but there were two things which stuck with me and which i shall share with rof:
1. if you leave an oven or BBQ grill in the grass overnight, the dew will magically clean it.
2. rub a walnut into scratches in wood to effect a half-arsed restoration job.
I just put my hand in every couple of days and brush off the flakes of lime deposit that have built up since the last time. Swishing around cold tap water also results in flakes.
Single cooker It’s just not heating up. I will try and read the name of the model. Apparently old cookers built to last but I could be pushing it a little.
Elephant, do you mean a single oven ? If so, pretty easy to replace element. Normally just involves undoing a few screws to remove the plate hiding it at the back of the oven. Lots of how to videos on YouTube. Easy to order an element online if you get the oven model number.
Muttley, you should have seen the pile of scale removed by the Quooker service engineer when we had ours done after moving in, hadnt been done for years. Although tbf I havent had him back in 7 years, it’s near the bottom of a very long list of chores.

is that so? makes sense. the old biddy on the daytime TV show suggested that no one knew how or why it ended up clean, but i suppose that sounds better than "let magic slugs clean your oven grill"

Don't drink hot drinks so never use the kettle.

Every three weeks? Christ.

Use a sachet of descaler solution.

We have a water softener and a boiling water tap thingummy
It doesn't get descaled.
The espresso machine gets a citric acid flush about twice a year.

You shouldn't be drinking softened water due to the salt content - the plumber should have bypassed the softener for the drinking tap.
Apparently the Quooker comes with £245 limescale removal cartridges which it promises will "extend the life" of the tank.

Whenever I remember. Sachet descalar, or vinegar.

We just get the Quooker guy to service the tap once a year. He changes the filters etc then,

The lemon thing works. You have to boil them up a couple of times to get the insides down and give the kettle a good scrubbing.
Vinegar also works - about 200ml then dilute with half a kettle. No chemicals, just a vinegar smelling kitchen!!

Once a month. Incredibly hard water where we are. Use these (Robert Dyas also stock them I think)

Also whilst we are on boring household tips, if you want chem free cleaner for the bathroom try spray white wine vinegar ie for grouting

chemicals are really good at cleaning

It's not chemical free is it? It's fruity acetic acid.

I do use a home-made vinegar solution to clean mirrors and windows. Less streaking than the chemical sprays in my experience.

Also you don't get the headaches like you do from strong limescale remover/ bleach fumes

I don't think I could live in a hard water area, it's impossible to get a good cup of tea, and you need twice as much shampoo.

Use a filtered water kettle as recommended by rollonfriday’s high jinx.

Let me think what could possibly go wrong with the combination of me, a screwdriver and an element.
