Why do the Israelis call their army a “defence force”?

Because as far as they are concerned it protects them from the enemies who surround them and isn’t their to fight overseas in things like the war on terror.

Everyone calls it "defence spending". Perhaps they also don't have the pompousness of separate branches of the armed forces like we have, so prefer an all encompassing title.

I dont think the Israeli military has global expeditionary pretentions like the British so in a sense they are more entitled to call their military a defence force than we are.
