This year was the hottest June since 1846 in England and the joint hottest September (give or take a .1C here or there , final figure to be determined )
Yet people will remember this as a cool and poor summer just because July and August weren't hot and the warmest air masses didn't hit during that peak of heat potential so we didn't hit the heights of summer 2022 overall .
20C is reached most Octobers at some point and not that remarkable in the first week , however the model view of the first fortnight shows we are going to be around this level for the next week or so and indeed October may end up historic as well
October is often quite warm. I dont think it usually gets truly autumnal until late October early November. Autumn is gradually getting squeezed out of existence as a proper season - it seems to only last abou 5- 6 weeks before its gets wintery in December.
We have also had quite a few years where autumn has extended into winter with December in particular seriously falling away. Last year was the first proper winter edition since the infamous 2010
I have traditionally thought of autumn as jumper or light jacket weather and winter as proper coat weather - the jumper light jacket phase now does not seem to start until late October with coats usually needed in early December
I like the warm. It suits me to see England’s climate warming up but the endless rain gets a bit much. TBH we haven’t had proper seasons for as long as I can remember.
July and august is when most people are on holiday so the weather in those months is what counts as most peoples summers although for many years now the weather appears to be sunnier and more settled at beginning and end of summer.
nobody should be rooting for the climate to warm up, it has a destabilising effect on the whole world. God knows what kind of world our children will grow up in.
if it were a nice clear unseasonably warm day - I would say isn’t the weather lovely - but long term climate warming would still be a concern unless you’re a massive bell cheese

I recall October 22 having very warm spells too.
Space for two major test series per summer. Surely?

The exceptional warmth in June and September was across the UK not just in the south
As mentioned above 20c is common in early October but less so later in the month

I have it down as the outright hottest September
It was also the hottest June since 1846
September was hotter than any summer month
People will still call this a poor summer despite 2 of the months being essentially record breaking (within living memory)
It wouldn't surprise me if October came close to or beat the record either
