A 19-year-old law student at Nottingham Trent University has been jailed for two and half years for blackmailing a schoolgirl.
Zeeshan Aqsar became friends with the 15-year-old girl via Blackberry Messenger. He persuaded her to send him a picture of herself wearing a bra via Snapchat, an app which deletes photgraphs after a few seconds. But Aqsar had downloaded software which allowed him to save the image. He sent it back to the girl and threatened to send it to her friends unless she gave him £100 and more revealing pictures of herself.
The girl sent Aqsar four more photographs and handed over £70 she had been given for her birthday. Predictably Aqsar said that he wanted more money and that he would reveal all the photographs if she didn't pay up. The girl went to the police who arrested Aqsar and seized his phone.
Aqsar pleaded guilty to blackmail at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court. His barrister said that Aqsar had no previous convictions and that, while he accepted that his actions were "utterly unacceptable, gross and offensive", a jail sentence would destroy him.
Judge David Fletcher said that the blackmail was so severe that a custodial sentence was inevitable. He sentenced Aqsar to two-and-a-half years and issued an indefinite restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the girl.
