I can't stand Trump... but I think it is a fairly brilliant PR position.
For weeks people (me included) have been thinking of two scenario's. He loses if he signs, his only "win" (which is pyric but people won't know that) is to declare an emergency..
So he takes the money and does both.
Whilst at the same time building up a social media "Mueller is a bust" rhetoric when people will be concentrating on the wall... it goes in as white noise.
Except that now Democrats can force Republicans to take a stand on way or another by passing a bill in the House to end the emergency. The Senate will then have to go on record one way or another. Everyone knows that the emergency is bullshit so Republicans will have to either play to Trumps base or to everyone else.
And any moves will immediately be challenged in the courts, so nothing will actually happen anyway.
The public will know just how bad Trump is at negotiating. FFS, he ended up with less money that he was offered before the shutdown, and has to swallow additional restrictions that weren't there originally.
Yeah... but he'll have done it and been blocked. He won't be blocking the incomes of 800,000... to his supporters it's the Democrats fault. He doesn't care about the wall, he cares about being blamed for not doing the wall.
"Yeah... but he'll have done it and been blocked."
Yes, he will have lost. And not only will he have lost, he will have ended up with less than he would have got if he had just signed the original bill. He got less through his own stupidity/cowardice.
You're missing the point Chambers... it's the symbolic gesture that is abhorrent. Everyone knows it isn't needed and it won't be effective.
Trump is saying... we don't like brownish Spanish people next door..our neighbours are inferior, our enemy and a threat.
Is that the symbolic gesture that it is ok for a President to make?
I don't think anyone gives a stuff about the 4 billion being wasted... it's the damage it does to the morality, ethics and conscience of Americans within the symbol.
I’m terribly sorry but the twice as many illegal Canadians figure really doesn’t feel like it can be accurate for a number of reasons.
Firstly if that were the case then wouldn’t Canada be basically empty?
Secondly, what’s the economic pull given that Canada has a roughly approximate standard of living and way better levels of politeness and socialised medicine.
Thirdly, what is even an illegal immigrant from Canada - given that the border is porous and most Canadians live within a 50 mile drive of it anyway wouldn’t a better term be ‘commuter’?
As you are here Draco, could you help me out with why he is trying to get the funds for this from Congress as I believe that he may have gone on record on the odd occasion as saying that Mexico is going to pay for it?
Wasn’t that actually a bit of a central plank of the whole policy?
Seeking inspiration from the National Trust, surely a big Mexican Ha-Ha would be better and cheaper in any case. It would also not spoil the lovely views from the north.
Because many Americans don't really view Canadians as 'illegal' Supes. They look and talk like us, some probably think its just a few extra Northern States tacked on.
So we’ve gone from ‘no one cares’ to ’none of this particular group of people care, although they regularly shout the word MEXICO if you do ask them for an opinion on it’?
Any further clarifications that you would like to issue?
Strutts the overwhelming majority off illegal immigration into the US involves people entering legally and then overstaying their visas. Canadians come over to work and just end up staying.
Supes, I knew about the overstay point, but the Canadian number just doesn’t feel right for the reasons mentioned above. Happy to see figures to the contrary.
And speaking of figures did you see that in a YouGov poll of December 2018 63% of Trump voters in 2016 expect to see him build a wall and make Mexico pay for it.
But that can’t be right surely because didn’t Draco just tell us they don’t care where the funds come from?
So just to check in under 15 minutes we’ve gone from ‘no-one cares about funding’ to ‘the supporters don’t care about funding’ to ‘yes I admit the supporters do seem to care about funding, but they are going to be offered else, that isn’t within Donnie’s power to give either’?
Not actually my president though is he? I mean technically, what with me being English and all. Nor yours for that matter.
Also ‘collusionlol’? Given that the investigation has obtained 5 convictions to date and over 30 indictments I think that all but the rabidly unhinged would argue that there is maybe something to look at here.
Sorry, I was talking about the Special Counsel investigation headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller into the Russian government's efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential election obtaining those conviction and indictments to date.
Were you thinking of some other investigation? Are we talking at cross purposes?
I believe what Robert Mueller finds will be the truth, and so far that has resulted in 5 Trump campaign staffers, including the campaign chairman, being found guilty of lying about contacts with Russia and other offences.
Trump is a crook and he will be going to jail the second he leaves office. The SDNY filings make that abundantly clear. He is already named as an unindicted co-conspirator. Unless he makes a deal to resign, he will die in prison. Of that I'm pretty confident.
Maybe if you read an actual newspaper instead of fooking about on Reddit and InfoWars you might know that too.
Those fellers with the criminal records as a result must be feeling pretty sore that the whole thing is a fantasy.
Still as it is a fantasy you must be pretty confident that the investigation won't obtain any more convictions. Would you care for some sort of side wager?
Draco..you know the fire department disputed those figures...being pissed off that the president said they allowed more than the stadium capacity in..and the police estimates were more attended betos event....look at the pictures.
Precisely the opposite doggers. He has now put Republicans in congress in the position where they have to take a side. They will have to either step on his crazy train or stay off and try to stop it.
He cannot win in 2020 on a base only strategy and the only thing preventing his impeachment is having Republicans in the Senate on his side.
He has just increased his chances of both losing in 2020 and in being impeached.
Trump hasn't done anything besides a tax cut for rich people. The fact that you think he has all these accomplishments and that Obama had none shows just how incredibly ignorant you are.
Obama passed Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, American Recovery and Repair Act, Lilly Ledbetter Fair pay act, he repealed Don't Ask Dont Tell and set up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Trump has one measly tax cut.
Again, read a newspaper once in a while. Reddit has addled your brain.
it's that whole weak/strong issue thing. It is weird to be hung up on that kinda thing. The fact that he uses it as an insult just shows how massively insecure he is in his own masculinity.
It is the same with his use of "cuck" as an insult. At first i though he was just copying the other kids but I does feel as if he has serious issues surrounding his own masculinity and relationships with women.
Supes...interesting...I was assuming the GOP would be forced to back him...they are supporting the bizarre state of emergency...despite the statement that he doesn't need it...
Do you think his party will flip? Sadly I don't think we're seeing evidence of that..
The problem with the personal attacks on supes is twofold. Firstly, you don't know him. You have no idea of the reality or complexity of his life. Secondly, if his life was as shit as you assert, why would you..a self reported, successful, fulfilled and blessed individual want to make his life worse?
Tecco, yes, Trump can veto, but with 2/3 majority it can be over-ridden.
But that isn’t really the point. The state of emergency will end up in the courts, but Republicans will have to defend their vote when running in 2020. The Wall is not popular and the declaration of emergency is even less popular. Trump has screwed Republicans in Congress, which was why McConnell was so desperate to talk him out of the declaration of emergency.
'While opponents celebrated, some residents and business owners rued the death of the deal and expressed anger at what they saw as a betrayal by officials who bowed to the loudest voices.
“This was a gift,” said Josh Bowen, who owns John Brown Smokehouse near the site now dominated by warehouses and old industrial buildings where Amazon planned to build its campus. “Have you seen this neighborhood? It’s a dump over here.”
Polls showed that solid majorities of New Yorkers supported an Amazon campus in Queens. Tenant leaders at public housing developments spoke in favor of the project and unions for construction and building service workers supported the plan. But supporters never mobilized at the scale opponents
In a statement, Queensbridge Houses tenant association president April Simpson and other tenant leaders called the failure of the deal a “disaster” and blamed “grandstanding politicians” who “spread misinformation to whip up the small band of opponents”. “We took it and we destroyed it. For no reason,” he said. “These socialists, whoever they are, these activists, they’re not doing the math on this. Their whole mindset is ‘No, no, no, no’.”

Well all the people at the rallies who shouted back ‘MEXICO’ when Donald shouted st them ‘Who is going to pay for the wall?’ seemed to care a lot.
Also Congress seems to care - hence there was that shutdown-y thing going on that you may have seen.
Also I think the Mexicans probably care as they haven’t volunteered payment yet.
So that’s 3 lots of folks just off the top of my head who seem to care who is paying.
