Ex-Slaughter and May lawyer and serial entrepreneur Daniel Cowen has launched a new social media app to help share great experiences in a handheld fashion.

Echoer officially launched yesterday and is available to download - gratis - in the Apple app store right now. The concept is simple. Opening the app presents the user with a map of their local area, populated by the thoughts of other local users recommending stuff to do, see, eat and drink. So if you've found a good pub, you can add a recommendation "echo" (in the form of a big colourful bubble) to the map for all other users to see. Anyone else who agrees with your review can elect to "amp it up", which means that bubble gets bigger and more noticeable. If that didn't make sense, here's a quick video on how it works.

Echoer is echoing through social media

Cowen had a fine track record as a lawyer, spending four years at Slaughters before a brief stint as an associate at Latham & Watkins. He then turned his hand to something rather more creative, and found success with the brilliant Last Night Never Happened, a clever bit of kit which allows you to delete any foolhardy comments you may have made on Twitter and Facebook whilst under the influence of strong drink.

Cowen joins the select group lawyers who've escaped under the lawyer-proof fence, including the inventor of a special potty, the seller of underwear to prevent airport security gawping at your genitals, and the legendary Tyler Coulson, who packed in the rat race to take his dog for a 5,000 mile walk across the USA.

Dan's success is attributed to the simple fact that he is the mac daddy of social media mobile apps. Nothing more... I wish I could be Dan..
