Radiohead - no surprises

It speaks to me from years gone by where I loved the music and did not focus on the lyric. Now the lyric means a lot.  We all have that ‘was he writing for me?’ moment now and then.

——-

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal
You look so tired, unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

And no alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit
My final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises, please

Such a pretty house
And such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (get me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises, please (get me out of here)

Good melancholy.
I heard Jordan Rakei cover it well last night on Jo Whiley’s prog and was reminded. A breathtaking cover.
It’s around 1hr 13 mins 50 seconds here.

tbh, these are on my songs to avoid when in a low mood.  The list includes "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter".

Songs that get me out of the funk

B52's - Topaz or, Give Me Back My Man

The Walls - To The Bright and Shining Sun

Favourite Radiohead lyric is still "I used to fly like Peter Pan" from Bones. Hits me every more as I get older.

Honourable mention to Motorcycle Emptiness on the subject of Manics of course. I don't quite get Tristesse but I know it's a lot of people's "go to".

I went through a patch of life some time back where I was really, really angry, distressed, grieving for lost youth. It had been stolen from me when I wasn't watching.  Time just came up, brazenly snatched it out of my hands and ran down the street. I couldn't keep up so he was gone.  Like all robberies and burglaries I felt violated and troubled. I could not have my cherished thing.

I've tried to like Radiohead but to me they're classic Emperor's New Clothes...

Everything

Yesterday, I woke up sucking on a lemon

ffs

I'm a huge Jordan Rakei and Radiohead fan so the combo couldn't have been more perfect, Mutts.

Nerve on Wallflower is one of my favourite songs ever.

If you also love him, you might like Pete Josef if you haven't already discovered him.  I'd start with the Album Colour, and the song Colour on that album.  Sublime.  Quite Rakei-adjacent I think.

To be fair to him she is 40, which isn’t that young even if he’s 55.  Not like Al Pacino or the other revolting examples of wives who could be granddaughters.

Also he split very amicably from his former wife and cancelled all concerts so he could spend time with her as she was dying.

I bought Pablo Honey when it came out.  Excitedly waited for the release of  The Bends so bought the My Iron Lung EP (Lewis Mistreated is the standout track).  Bought The Bends in HMV Oxford Street when that was released and loved every minute of it.  The along came OK Computer and aside from Paranoid Android and Karma Police, I really didn't like it.  Kept going back to it to see if I was wrong but still didn't like it.

Never bothered with anything after that.

Great choice. This plays regularly on my internal jukebox.

Radiohead are great, haven't released a dud and live they are second to none. Their B-Sides are better than most bands biggest bangers.

Thom's lyrics can be a bit impenetrable sometimes, but I just assume that's when he is using his voice melodically rather than singing about something meaningful.

On the radio show linked above Rakei mentions being an "In Rainbows" baby and says the "Old Stuff" (i.e. OK Computer) never gets mentioned.

Made me feel old!

I bought The Bends because I met a girl on holiday and lied that I knew them (and Supergrass) who she was well into.  Bought them as soon as I got back from holiday and was hooked.  Every album after OK Computer, which I loved straight away, I didn't like initially.  It always takes a number of listens to realise it's yet another work of genius.  What a band.

Unpopular opinion, The Bends is their best one.  A phenomenal album, every track.

Good shout on 'Bones', whoever that was.

My favourite lyric on it is on The Bends itself, 'They brought in the CIA, The tanks and the whole marines, To blow me away, To blow me sky high'
