You meet an old pal for drinks last night. She's just flown back in from the US. She's a party animal and reveals she's found some new version of Colombian marching powder that she liked a lot. So much so that she brought back some (1g or so) that was left over from her unused stash.
You obviously look horrified and she tells you to loosen up and live a little. That she is happy taking some risks in life and that the risk here is low. She seemed to think that, if busted, she would get told off and/or a small fine. Completely ridicules the idea that it could lead to a criminal record. She's not a lawyer but a journalist.
Views please, rof.

1. she's a journalist not a lawyer.
2. it's been clear to me for a long time that even in say "professional classes living in SW london" there are two almost completely unmixed social circles: 1 where nobody does drugs and 1 where everybody does drugs and the two don't really mix.

She's wearing a wire. I have watched the fake sheikh documentary and this is a classic sting.

What clubman said. Drs seem to fall into those two camps too.

Clubbers I don't have a strong view on the drugs element. To me this is more about the risk reward analysis ...

Chances of getting caught as a middle class person are very low. I think from a health perspective cocaine isn’t worth it after one’s mid 30s (chances of a cardiac event increase, I’ve seen lots of likely cocaine deaths as age advances and some heart disease etc appears).

seriously, I'd stay very far away from her.

She got 1kg back from the US how? Sounds like a nutter.

She's a cvnt who thinks the only risk is to her.

Or rather, the only risk that matters.

So the sort of person who might not get vaccinated because there was very little chance that they themselves might die?

Crypto I agree the risk is pretty low but the consequences are pretty high cost if busted. I wonder if she will mention it to her other half or already has.

He's never struck me as a risk taker and has always been the calmer half. He's a financial journalist.

Busted at an airport, yes, I agree and it isn’t something I’d do but I suspect the chances of someone getting caught (even at an airport) with some limited quantity/ personal use in their checked bags are pretty low.

That part was already covered. OP said she was a journalist

The point for me is why risk so much for max 200 quid worth.
I think she did it for the thrill. She compared it to speeding.
Except the consequences of getting busted are not quite the same, I said. To which she kept saying yeah but the risk is low, I didn't get caught and I would do it again, grandad

I think the risk of being caught coming through from the US is pretty small and know plenty of people who’ve flown and only realised at their destination that they’d left something in their luggage after a domestic trip and they’ve never been picked up. Little different to deciding to carry something on a flight from Bogotá or Ibiza where they will be pulling people over in customs.
Years ago I was in Rhodes and a fellow holiday maker offered me and my friends a joint. My mate’s face was a picture as he took a drag as the guy explained he’d carried it out to Rhodes in his arse.

Why are you flapping about the risk to someone else?
Main question though...did you bang? Sounds like she would be fun...

Sailo inadvertence is understandable.
Ego these are her choices to make and to bear the consequences. I think once I qualified I have been uber careful not to jeopardise the old career so maybe I am the boring grandad she says I am

So, no?

Haha no

A single gram I suspect you’d just get a caution which is no problem as a journalist.

Yeah there was probably more risk of the plane going down. Time to worry about things that matter or that you can control cuy cuy.

I have a mate who earns a steady 150k in a corporate in-house role. He always says to me I wish I could do what you do (work for myself). He could, as he has a lovely niche, but won't take the risk (which is small). This is typical of most lawyers imo and why they get depressed in mid-life.

I don’t know what the SRA are like with this stuff but the GMC tends to come down hard on people for drink driving and even simple possession. I think being in a regulated profession changes our risk tolerance - I certainly know people who’d use more “substances” if it wasn’t for fear of regulatory issues (and some that do in spite of them).

I don't have strong views on using etc. Up to the person.
For me, this is about risk. Why run this sort of risk for a piffling amount. Even if the chances of getting busted are v v v low. I see this as a major lack of judgment

See above. The consequences are much less for her than for you or me.

Yes night in the cells and a lot of inconvenience for her but a lawyer would be unemployed probably. Her behaviour is silly spoilt 🍌 and tacky journalist. Are you having some sort of mid life crisis?

Worth a danger shag I'd say

The SRA regulations are the real shackles. Oh, the things I would do.

The number of people I know who do this (take class As across international borders) is crazy. I remember breaking up with a short lived boyfriend for this very reason on a trip to Ibiza in the early noughties.
imo the real shackles are, if you travel, the impact that having some sort of record (even a caution) for drug possession has on your ability to cross borders freely. Bye bye ESTA so her US trips would become a major hassle - and visa free travel to most countries will also be tricky unless you lie on the visa waiver form which is not great. Not worth the risk in my mind - just buy the gear domestically if that’s your bag (not mine, don’t touch the stuff).

Exactly tc. Just buy it locally.
The judgment issue is a huge one for me. I would break up with someone over something like this because this is not the type of person I can build anything with.

I think the risk might be higher than she realises. Yes, if caught in possession of a small amount and a previous clean record she’d almost certainly get a caution. However, if caught at the airport with it, it wouldn’t be simple possession but importing a controlled substance and much more likely to be treated seriously.
Of note, once you have a caution even for simple possession, it’s much harder to get a visa for some countries ( such as the US) which might put a crimp in her career. It’s why there’s such an uproar about Harry’s green card.

Some unanswered questions here CC. Are you repressing your real needs which are hotter and riskier than you will admit to?

Update: she told her young man and they've had a blazing row. She is annoyed as she thinks he's being "overly dramatic".

Carrying in the UK is all very well. Going through a UK airport is a risk I wouldn't take, sure you might just get a slap but it might be very serious indeed because its not just possession. But taking it through a foreign airport I would never do. Far to many unknowns, even if its whether they will ever let you in again. I don't have plans to do a lot of travel in the US, but I'd sure like to keep the option.

It's stupid and not worth it, she could buy locally, doing drugs is a bit stupid too but I used to when I was younger so I can hardly judge.

I'm surprised you can see a gram of coke.

Minimal immediate or serious consequence if caught coming to UK with what could easily be passed-off as a forgotten pocket item I should imagine (UK-US would prolly be a different story).
Longer term, she would likely be flagged and every subsequent flight anywhere would be a pain is the arse.
Some top customs bloke once gave me some good advice - essentially, do it once and do it big. Likelihood of being caught first time is apparently very low (as long as you're not completely dumb).

Ask those Irish and Scots burds who got nicked in Peru.
And perhaps ask her to think of all the misery caused by the drugs trade.

You might also be surprised what you can see with a gram of coke.

One of my mates who is a GP brought MDMA back from Ibiza tucked in her front bottom, and told us referring to the storage method as “nature’s pocket”
