Last time I tried to send £100k to Santander from a client account they panicked and the money got sent to a special holding account that no-one in the branch knew how to get at. A right mess with me being accused of theft!
That Santander a/c sounds like it fits the brief. Maybe 50k a head into premium bonds if the "dead" time getting in and out isn't too high a proportion of the overall holding time, and if you have a high marginal tax rate.
By the way, since this is ROF, I should have made it clear the the ‘proper’ in the title refers to the question, not the mere bagatelle that is the sum of £250k…

1 year locked savings bond is 6.2% from NS&I. But you may have to deal with NS&I, which i would not advise.
