Gadens Law has announced that it will launch in Singapore this month. It has poached banking and finance partner Marc Rathbone from Clifford Chance to lead the new office.

Gaden's says it is "pleased" at the expansion. The firm last ventured outside of Australia over 40 years ago, when it set up an office in Papua New Guinea, so the itchy feet are understandable. Even Gadens' website sounds ready to move on,  groaning that the firm's already been involved in "almost every" energy and infrastructure project in PNG.

Gadens will need to fight for a place at the table. It joins a slew of firms jostling to exploit Singapore's proximity to the Chinese market, including flipfloppers Morrison & Foerster and  Freshfields, who both wrote it off and left before changing their minds. Still, if Gadens really wants to stand out from the Raffles crowd, it can always ship in its homegrown rockstar.
