VAR Transcript

Well that's cleared it up m8s

VAR: Possible offside Diaz

Assistant referee 1: Coming back for the offside mate

Assistant referee 2: Give it

VAR: Just checking the offside. Delay, delay

VAR: Give the kick point, let's go. Kick point please

Referee: Yeah no worries mate

Replay operator: So here we are

Referee: Wait ok

Replay operator: Just get a tight angle

VAR: Yeah give me a 2D line ready after this one for frame two after that

Replay operator: So frame two there?

VAR: That's fine

VAR: Perfect yeah

VAR: 2D line on left boot

Replay operator: Let me just switch angles

VAR: Romero I think it is?

Replay operator: I think it might be this angle better? Happy with this angle?

VAR: Yep

Replay operator: 2D line on the boot. Yep ok.

VAR: And stop.

VAR: Check complete, check complete. That's fine, perfect (showing Diaz is clearly onside). Off.

Referee: Cheers mate

VAR: Thank you mate

Referee. Well done boys. Good process (game restarts with a free-kick)

Replay operator: Wait, wait, wait, wait. The on-field decision was offside. Are you happy with this?

Assistant VAR: Yeah

Replay operator: Are you happy with this?

Assistant VAR: Offside goal yeah. That's wrong Daz.

VAR: What?

Replay operator: On-field decision was offside. Are you happy with this image? Yeah it's onside. The image that we gave them is onside.

Assistant VAR: He's played him. He's gone offside.

VAR: Oh (expletive)

Replay operative: Delay delay. Oli [PGMOL Hub Ops] saying to delay. Oli's saying to delay.

VAR: Pardon.

Replay operator: Oli's calling in to say delay the game. The decision is onside

VAR: Can't do anything

Replay operator: Oli's saying to delay. Oli's saying to delay

VAR: Oli?

Fourth official: Yeah

Replay operative: Delay the game, to delay the game? Stop the game.

VAR: They've restarted the game

VAR: Can't do anything, can't do anything.

Assistant VAR: Yeah, they've restarted. Yeah

VAR: Can't do anything.

Assistant VAR: no

VAR: I can't do anything. I can't do anything.

VAR: [expletive]

It’s not the ref making a mistake that I object to, it’s the fact the technology is supposed to eliminate errors and certainly in cases like offside. Just get rid of it and I and all other fans will go back to putting up with the vagaries of human decision-making.

Well quite

We taking the decision away from the best qualified person on the pitch (the ref) and giving it to some chump in a van who has just made a lot of money in UAE

Put it on a big screen on the stands line rugby so the red doesn’t have to run off and watch it on a tiny screen.  Also need to get better communication rugby style where they spell out the decision and ask the TMO to confirm.

chuffster that take and all the others pre transcript saying this is a var issue rn’t really logical

var worked perfectly well here

(and does work well 4 offside, i tend 2 agree with u on other uses of var tho)

the issue here was solely poor communication protocol. nothing 2 do with var at all - human error

"Cheers, mate." "Thank you, mate"

The sound of two professionals at work right there.

Never heard that in the rugby or the cricket.

PGMOL need to take some lessons from some proper professionals. And take that first initial out of their name until they do.

There is very, very little that football can learn from rugby in any respect or at any echelon if it wants to improve, particularly not removing the friendly working relationship of colleagues, unless by way of negative comparison with what is a manifestly inferior sport in every conceivable regard.

VAR should be reserved for offsides with a clear communication system (none of this "check complete" nonsense) and for 3x challenges by each team like tennis.

Heh! the rugby c u n t s are in!

yeah nobody in rugby has ever called anyone else “mate”

or ponced around with fake blood to win a few points or anything

total chopper’s sport sorry

In the cricket they always say "original/umpire's decision was..." and then whether they are reversing it.  And what the new decision is.  Seems they just need to do that in football.

Wot Dux said. It doesn’t work in footie because of the way it’s used, and that’s driven by the fact the clubs don’t really want it, because properly used it promotes transparency and fairness. Footie is corrupt from top to bottom, of course it’s not going to self regulate effectively.

I feel terrible for the person (people) making the mistake. Tough one to come back from.

VAR hasn’t added anything to the game and made the match experience (if you go and to a lesser extent if you don’t) much worse.

I celebrate (on the rare occasion my team scores) in a different way - never sure if it’s going to count.

The delays are ridiculous. The way decisions are checked make no sense to me. Off side and the way lines are drawn don’t seem consistent to me.

I could accept being on the wrong end of ref decisions - it was just life.

Get it in the bin

the dumb thing is with all the money football has there is absolutely no doubt they could have a st7-of-the-art hawkeye equivalent that cre7s a 3d model of players and the ball from sensors, which could tell u in an instant if the ball is offside with a v high degree of accuracy

instead, they have 2 blokes drawing questionable lines with a ruler on grainy video stills

if the fa doesn’t have a duty of care 4 the shit tools they give their referees, they bloody well ought 2

The goal line tech isn’t infallible either - see that Villa goal against Sheffield United 3 years ago. Keeper was completely behind the post with the ball.

I am not against that though - but that’s where it should end.

I'm no football ref but that conversation is totally incomprehensible.  A layman would be able to understand the chat between the officials at a rugby match when there's a reference to VAR as they make clear statements and ask clear questions and also the linesmen are involved in the process and can see the replay as well.  Four sets of eyes are always better than one.

Luis Garcia ghost goal.

I know the memory must hurt given you were supporting Chelsea at the time, but was this the one where if the goal wasn't given, it was a red card for the keeper and a penalty? wonderful example m8 🤣

the answer is obviously that VAR ref and the ref should have a proper discussion together that is broadcast to the stadium as it is in rugby.

Better yet scrap it - errors happen but football should be a free flowing game and goal should be celebrated without nervously looking up at a screen.

Nah mate always been a city fan. I support my home town club, unlike the vast majority of tourists who traipse to anfield and OT.

(although it seemed to be mostly gala fans at OT last night).

They need a protocol so that the discussion between the off-pitch official and the on-pitch official doesn't resemble a chat down the pub.

Like, no chat between the off PO and the on PO until the off PO has made his decision. Then the off PO says:

"Your decision (or your intended decision) is X, please confirm."

"Confirmed."

"That decision is WRONG, repeat WRONG. (or RIGHT repeat RIGHT)."

"What is your reason?"

(e.g.) "A was played onside by B."

"Thank you. Decision is X. Confirm."

"Decision is X."

I don't know why I wrote all this out. I don't even watch soccer.
