Are they hoping to replace it with a portrait of Suella to deter asylum seekers, because no one would want to be in the proximity of such sheer ugliness?

I would love an actual Tory (I think there’s about 3 left on here) to condemn this event.

one of the most pointless and spiteful actions taken by the current govt, and there is a long list to choose from.

Charlotte Khan of the refugee charity Care4Calais said: “If Mickey Mouse is too ‘welcoming’ for ministers, the question is what will they replace him with in order to inflict more fear on traumatised asylum seeking children – Maleficent? Ursula? Maybe even Cruella herself? The real villains in this sorry tale are Robert Jenrick and the rest of this heartless bunch that call themselves ministers.
Excellent work there tbf

it’s extraordinary. it’s not really their usual brand of incompetence or fascistic. it’s not ideologically conservative nor is economically damaging. it’s not obvious corruption nor is it otherwise benefiting their own or a donor. it carries no logic, not even a twisted 1
it’s pure, pointless, despicable cruelty

But but but the cartoons weren’t AGE APPROPRIATE!

How did he arrive at a point in his life where he felt it was appropriate to spend public money on having existing murals painted over because they might make children feel less terrified?

The murals gave a very clear message - "why did you want to come to this mickey mouse country?".

I am trying to take, and generally succeeding in taking, a non tribal approach to politics these days. My opposition to the current government is due to them being inept, corrupt and entirely ineffective, not due to them being conservatives per se.
However it’s just impossible to imagine a minister of any other party making this order, isn’t it. As if a Labour or Liberal Democrat or SNP politician would ever have made a policy decision specifically aimed at making already frightened and dislocated children feel worse.
Cruelty is just a right wing thing. The left care, the right don’t.

I’d rather see them try to defend it! But none of them will because, to their absolute credit tbf, all of the tories I know were quietly appalled by Jenrick’s gratuitous cruelty.

for all that, there’s been no action against Jenrick by the party has there
He hasn’t been fired from his ministerial role, let alone had the whip withdrawn and been made the subject of any enquiry as to his suitable to continue as an MP.

absolutely. And it was a decision actively taken and carried out. He thought about it - what can I do to make things worse for scared and vulnerable children. He's an utter bastard.
It's a pity all contractors asked to do this ddn't refuse.

Emphasis on the quietly. They'll still vote for it. They'll still enable it. They'll still turn a blind eye to it.
'Oh but I couldn't possibly make a difference to it happening'.

Jeric took the rap for this, but the idea was that of "Lord" Simon Murray, art "collector", junior barrister, parish councillor and oaf.

If I’d been running the said asylum centre, I’d first pretend not to have seen any communications about this, for maybe six weeks or so. Then if asked for comment I’d say that nothing had come through “the proper channels” (I don’t think junior ministers actually have direct line authority over asylum processing centres). Would also have instructed my PA to “accidentally” redirect calls on the issue to Battersea Dogs Home. Then eventually I’d probably have been forced to acknowledge the issue and maybe even required to promise to action it. At which point I would simply have done nothing about it. And yes if I’d been a painter and decorator I would absolutely have refused the work.

anyone actively involved in making or promulgating this decision is unsuitable to continue in public office, that’s clear

I'm not how wasting the time and resources of this fine charity would be at all helpful or productive.

that’s a fair point
I’d have diverted them to conservative party central office
