You deffo can airdrop onto a non Apple TV but it might be done by the skybox/minibox. I have played YouTube videos on my tv in Tecco Towers from my iPad and I do not have an Apple TV.
Dont have a smart tv or sky here to check tho, I'll take a look on the weekend and figure out what it's dropping into.
Correction I think the YouTube thing just goes by Chromecast to Sky Q so isn't limited to YouTube but does require a Chromecast enabled app (like YouTube).
VGA - 15 holes proper trapezoid shape - buy the lightning to VGA dongle
DVI - squarer lots more holes and a cross / line at one end - DVI and HDMI are interchangeable signals so you buy the HDMI dongle and then use a cable with HDMI on one end and DVI on the other like this:
FAOD I haven't actually done this with an iphone, but I have done HDMI to DVI before on computers so there isn't a technical reason why it won't work unless there is some specific security to stop it. HDMI is theoretically capable of having security down the line but doesn't usually from computers...

You can just airdrop it if you've got a smart telly.

Depends whether the app you are using is set up for chromecast non?
Airdrop only works on an apple TV IIRC

Nope, I have an LG and it works. Hmm may be dropping it onto the sky box tho, I've not tried it on a telly without sky before.

Sky Q has a YouTube receiver so you can send YouTube videos directly but not general stuff. It does have Airplay (not AirDrop) but that is audio only.
Apple TV and you can Airplay video (and do cool home automation stuff).
The other alternative is (assuming a halfway modern iPad) a lightning to HDMI dongle and using an actual cable.

Teclis you are using chromecast rather than airdrop for youtube because the youtube app is chromecast enabled.

Ahhh. Well I don’t use the youtube app but I’m assuming that safari is somehow enabled to connect in a similar manner.

I don't think Safari as a whole is - but some sites have the functionality built in.

or plug it into the TV which isn't ideal if you're sat on your sofa

So AppleTV or dongle plus HDMI cable.
Though I think some stuff gets blocked from HDMI (Netflix?).

Attach sticky backed velcro pads to each of TV screen and back of ipad. Attach ipad to TV screen. Sorted.

How old fashioned?

Only warning is you won't get sound with either of those.
You'd need a breakout box like this to give an audio signal as well and another wire:

(plus the lightning to HDMI)
