They didn’t partner over Vietnam! They reluctantly supported the same side in a limited way for very different reasons. They famously fought to get to plane crash sites first for US technology. The USSR gave as little military aid as it thought it could get away with consistent with being perceived as the leader of the communist world. China didn’t want the Americans on their border but nor did it want a strong united communist Vietnam. When China opportunistically invaded the Vietnamese Paracel Islands the Russians were almost as livid as the N Vietnamese.
