An Indian lawyer claims that he was the victim of an abusive attack by a group of other lawyers whilst attending court.

D Balaji attended the District Sessions Court in the Indian town, Thiruvannamalai, in July to file a criminal petition.  V Ramakrishnan the president of the Thiruvannamalai Bar Association approached Balaji and asked to see his ID.

Balaji alleges that after showing Ramakrishnan his ID, the president began to question his credentials and suddenly started shouting at him and asked if he was a "big shot". Balaji claims that the matter escalated when a gaggle of around 10 to 15 other lawyers arrived in support of the president.  The gang abused Balaji using "filthy language" and then proceeded to put the boot in quite literally by beating him up.

Balaji says that he did not file a complaint with the police immediately since he was suffering from severe pain following the shoeing. The Madras High Court has now directed police to investigate the assault.
