Minter Ellison has joined the likes of Hogan Lovells and Allens Arthur Robinson in the illustrious club of law firms with offices in Mongolia.

Minters' spanking new Ulaanbaatar office, which opened its doors on 1 February, is headed up by former Hong Kong Energy and Resources partner Elizabeth Ellis, who has relocated to Mongolia as the office's resident partner. And she will be joined by a team of local lawyers who've already been recruited, according a Lawyers Weekly report.

Managing Partner John Weber is inevitably excited about the move to energy-rich nation, "Mongolia is the next logical step for us. It is an increasingly strategic mark with a substantial resource-based economy and is attracting the attention of the global resources industry."  And no doubt Ellis is excited about landing in the city lovingly described by the Lonely Planet as a "cauldron of concrete and dirt".

    Welcome to Ulaanbaatar

The firm is also making moves to bulk up closer home, poaching two Corrs Chambers Westgarth partners to restock its Perth office, which was left rather bare after Squire Sanders nabbed 15 partners from it last year. Hopefully for Minters, which scored a miserable 56% in this year's RollOnFriday Australian Firm of the Year, this new growth strategy will give staff a reason to be cheerful.
