Crownies, a new 22-part series about the lives and loves of an unfeasibly attractive and improbably interesting bunch of Sydney lawyers, is to be screened on ABC.

Three of the five main cast members cut their acting teeth in Home and Away, according to a report in thewest.com.au. But Crownies will be a world away from Summer Bay - and from the beloved lager that shares its name. The new show focuses on five young lawyers working on important cases in the Department of Public Prosecutions.

The opening double episode features inappropriate hook-ups, leaks to journos and explosive rape allegations against high ranking officials. All of which may have seemed dramatic a few months ago, but in the light of current world events now appears almost prosaic.

But there are also plenty of simmering conflicts in the lawyers' personal lives. Lina Badir is a Palestinian lawyer – with a radical brother – whose work prosecuting radicalism for the DPP has led to a family rift. Whilst another character, Tatum Novak, has a dodgy dad who's used his ill-gotten gangster gains to pay here though university. And he may still be on the wrong side of the law.

So there should be enough juicy material to sustain the viewer through 22 episodes. And Crownies is from the same team which made Underbelly - the first series of which even managed to get a top judge's stamp of approval. So the bar is set high for Crownies.
