RollOnFriday's report last week on a possible Sydney office for legal giant Clifford Chance has set the rumour mill spinning faster than a Shane Warner flipper.

For those who love street justice, or just irony, the favoured theory was that Clifford Chance was looking to poach some partners from the recently opened Allen & Overy office. But sources who've reported into Firmspy recently have suggested that a bunch of Mallesons partners (although not the firm itself) might be the target. If this were to occur it would be consistent with the A&O market entrance strategy - the firm picked off a bunch of partners from Clayton Utz to start its Sydney office.

Rumour that Clifford Chance was in talks with Corrs have been knocked on the head by Corrs Chief Executive John Denton in a report in ALB. That's notwithstanding the limitless marketing potential of a firm called Clifford Chance Corrs Chambers: how's "we4C" as a new brand?

Whatever the outcome, Sydney firms have unsettled times ahead as London's scrutiny of the Aussie legal market continues. Just this week another big name partner - David Poddar of Mallesons - announced he too would be moving closer to Circular Quay. He'll join A&O after six months gardening leave.
