We are always searching for a more perfect dinner. It's that endless pursuit that, we think, won't ever be satisfied possibly because of our own idealistic fantasies of the perfect meal, and partly because we're greedy and we always want that little bit more. So, like a rolling stone, we just can't get no satisfaction. Something like that anyway.

So, with our ever more trivial pursuit in mind, we set off t'other night salivating and ever hopeful that would actually be surprised by the perfect dinner. Actually, in all seriousness, we thought there would be a good chance this was the one as we were heading to Roast. You see, as everyone knows, roasts are the king of dinners, so a dinner at the home of roast dinners was always going to be something special. It's a no-brainer - not least because we're big fans of Roast-To-Go. Their succulent roast pork in a soft bap is simple sandwich perfection and haunts our dreams. Ergo we had high hopes for its more sedentary big brother.

Even the animals being roasted were delighted just to be involved with the near perfect meal

This was, as far as we're concerned, as close to perfection as we've had in a dining experience. Roast did not disappoint. The food was magnificent - we started off with haggis scotch eggs that left a pleasant taste in our mind, before we ventured onto the roast section and plumped (controversially) for a rib-eye steak that was cooked to perfection. The chips too were possibly imported from Belgium The Home of Chips (patent pending) as they were crisp, salty and the perfect companion to our organic beef. Oh - we should mention that everything is sourced responsibly and is proudly British - so much so that they list their suppliers at the start of the menu almost daring you to question their integrity. As a list, it's a smattering of respectable producers - you're being fed well. We cannot enthuse enough about eating here - breakfast, lunch or dinner, we're sure we'd enjoy our meat here regardless of the hour.

Indeed, the meal was going swimmingly -  the venue was brilliant. All glass and looking over vintage Borough Market, but with high-tech shiny things poking out every so often - reminding you that you're dining somewhere exclusive and pricey. The staff too are attentive to your needs - even before you realise you need it. They're almost SAS trained in their speed, stealth and determination.

Roast was, quickly, ticking all the boxes... but then the fly in the ointment... dessert. It was very good, but not quite perfect (possibly because we mis-read the menu and ordered the wrong thing so were, accordingly, disappointed with what arrived). That it was entirely our own fault is beyond doubt, but let's not quibble over details - perfection was not achieved. Admittedly, this hastily added black mark was akin to that time we got 100% in our science exam but the teacher went back and crossed a right answer so we got 99%, but it stands all the same: The hunt for perfection goes on.
