We're truly embracing the summer what with our croquet exploits last week and, this week we're even considering busting out some espadrilles. We're basically about 10 days away from an all-body wax, fake tan and a mankini. Roll on winter...

Anyway, we were happily trying out our suede loafers and tailored shorts combo this week at West London canal eatery the Summerhouse (not to be confused with the Summerhouse in Padstow selling clothes and stuff - meant for an extra-long and slightly more expensive taxi ride). The West London Summerhouse is definitely a great spot to absorb the summer whilst enjoying some excellent cooking.

Piers found the brown trout to be especially abundant this year

The Summerhouse is more like a fixed boat, with the conservatory half of the restaurant basically sat on the water. You can overlook the canal - separated from the water by a very low window-box line of greenery. You can basically taste the water as the ducks wade past - the canal boats jostling alongside. It's the perfect view to enjoy a glass of wine and a starter of 'popcorn shrimp' (think of a posh KFC). After that, enjoy some swordfish steak or their own Summerhouse fish pie. Refreshingly, there isn't a burger available on the menu - though you can make do with a fat steak if you must, but be sure to have the sweet potato chips - they're summery.

The food really is worth a trip to the river to make sure you get those essential omega 3s the easy way - by eating tasty dishes expertly prepared whilst enjoying the canal-side view. You could be in Venice (if Venice had grubby narrowboats happily chugging past at dusk). Summer really does have a home here (sorry, that was awful).
