Exmouth Market is something of a fascination for us - we didn't really know it existed until about 4 years ago. Hitherto whenever we were in the area we were automatically drawn - wide-eyed and open-mouthed at the wonderment of the Mount Pleasant Royal Mail Sorting Office. Seriously - it's the way it sits at the crossroads imperious and imposing. It's the biggest post office in the WORLD (possibly). If only we had bothered to look closer and see, in its reflection, Dollar Bar and Grill.

Dollar (or $ as it was known during a slightly strange period when it only wanted to be known as a symbol) is one of the leading lights on Exmouth Market - despite some serious competition from independents like Medcalf and established 'big names' like Gail's bakery. It is one of the best reasons to get off the bus in what we thought was this strange wasteland between Farringdon and Angel normally best encountered during the day and sat on the top deck of a bus. Whatever you do, don't stop.

Inside the Mount Pleasant Sorting Office. Everyone's a little happier seeing this.

It was a wonder that we ever managed to wander into $ and we're utterly grateful that we did (not least because it provides a fantastic view of the Sorting Office). It is a distinct American theme but the food is more worldly with offerings such as the Prawn Tempura, linguine pesto pasta and wagyu beef steak. For us though the stars are the burgers - regardless of whether you're getting the £6 lunch special or the £12 'Million Dollar' burgers, you'll be sure to eat prime juicy beef - it's worth getting off the bus just for the patties, let alone the multitude of toppings such as guacamole and Jack Cheese.

Aside from the food, be sure to partake in the milkshakes on offer (Oreo!) and also the excellent cocktails - including their brilliant 'modern martini' range. There's a lot there that will keep you happily warm whilst you sit admiring the views.
