A few moons back we paid a highly successful visit to Tiny Robot – not, as we had thought, a futuristic Elton John tribute bar, but actually a funky American style club/restaurant in Westbourne Grove. We loved our time at TR so decided to try some mother’s milk and go to the original Giant Robot.

For those concerned with the Trade Descriptions Act (or the EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive), please don’t be – it’s definitely bigger (though, disappointingly, still not a robot – we have submitted a complaint accordingly). That said, we’ve been told by many friends that size doesn’t matter and that much is definitely true given the menu is pretty similar to its little sibling/offspring Tiny.

A Giant Robot and a Michael Bay tie-in. Ker-ching.

However, we do think there is a difference ‘tween the two – and not just the location of East to West. There’s a different atmosphere at GR – possibly because of the size, but it definitely seems busier and livelier… even the execution of service seems better… but perhaps that’s just our imagination.

Regardless – you can enjoy the ‘balls of meat’ here (though we recommend you go for the brilliant pasta dishes or the surprisingly tender burgers on offer. The sides are something special too and we’re a bit partial to the flatbreads (think pizza breads). The food is, therefore, reassuringly familiar.

The drinks are less so – the range of cocktails (and martinis) on offer is plentiful and we’ve been told it’s the same as at TR… but we don’t remember. That possibly speaks more of their potency than the wildly different presentation on the menu… still tastes good though.

So… all in all – Giant Robot is a bigger and better version of Tiny Robot. Sort of like USA v Canada or Bognor Regis v Wales.
