We were on something of a burger hunt this weekend. It was a craving itch we were desperate to scratch - and in style. So, with German celebrations still ringing in our ears we ventured out to London's hottest burger bar - Bar Boulud, the new restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental in Hyde Park.

We arrived with high expectations - after all, BB is the latest addition to the culinary options at the MO who will soon boast a Heston Blumenthal fine dining restaurant - clearly BB needs to be of the highest quality. It didn't disappoint with us when we had London's best burger.

You can't say you don't get your money's worth...

The restaurant is the height of excellence (as you would expect from the Mandarin Oriental stable) with service bordering on the heavenly and an interior of soothing brown and beige lit tastefully low. It is a perfect eating environment.

The food too is great, with arguably the best charcuterie platter in London (not convinced there's a huge amount of competition there though to be honest). But, clearly the best thing is the burger - specifically the Sunday Special Burger (only available on.. well, Sundays, and it's not on the menu - be sure to ask for it) which is an embarrassment of riches in paradoxically frugal times:

A pattie of brilliant organic beef containing a short-rib, truffle and foie gras - it oozes juicy taste and money. The only thing missing is a sprinkling of gold dust and caviar on the bun. A bargain at £20 (complete with fries and green salad).

Go now and avoid bitter disappointment with poor alternatives.
