MPs told they cannot stop no-deal Brexit

Was reading this in the Sunday Telegraph yesterday - MPs have missed their chance according to Dom Cummings. I do hope he's right.

If an election was called before the 31 Oct deadline, I would imagine that the EU would be prepared to extend until the results were known.

Whether or not the EU can extend unilaterally without a request from the UK, I don't know. I think there were some arguments being bandied about to that effect when the last deadline was looming. Seems a bit iffy to me.

If an election  Boris will campaign on basis we will be leaving immediately if he gets a majority.   I see no prospect of him allowing a no deal brexit with an election pending - he will ask for extension  and say to the electorate back me or lose brexit.  Way to risky to ask people to vote for you having just caused a national crisis of epic proportions - essentially for shits and giggles.

Didn't all the usual suspects say the same thing on here before the last deadline?

Get one thing straight Johnson doesn't give a shit about bexit, but he does give a shit about remaining PM.  If he crashes us out against the will of parliament and the majority of the people he may win us over some brexit party loons but will lose the votes of lots of people who currently want to "get on with it" but will be significantly less keen when they see what a no deal brexit really looks like.

He’s banking on Corbyn still being the opposition:.. he can crash out without a deal and then go to the country and ask for forgiveness on the basis that the alternative is a Trot.

A clean break may even be the best option in the long term as it provides the most flexibility for developing the future UK/EU relationship.

Anyone describing a no deal Brexit as a "clean break" needs to go and sit in the corner with the dunce cap on for a good long while.

I find there is suprisingly little shit given to the MPs who (and Lords) who overwhelmingly voted (a) for the Referendum and (b) to trigger Article 50, the latter of which's default was to leave the EU with no deal.

Particularly if you are an opposition MP - who's default position is that the Government is incompetent and couldn't organise a handjob in a brothel - you've given a copper-bottomed legitimacy to a technically advisory referendum, and you've created a default you think would be catastrophic, which can only be averted by a Government you think is useless.  Amazing really.

"he can crash out without a deal and then go to the country and ask for forgiveness on the basis that the alternative is a Trot"

Its not even an asking forgiveness thing.  If he crashes out pre-election while Parliament doesn't exist:

1. he gets to tell all the Brexit-y people - I've done what you wanted no point voting Brexit party;

2. its probably too early for the country to have really felt the worst of the pain (and he'll blame preparedness on Parliament bringing him down and stopping proper preparations); and

3. it ceases to be a question of whether you are Brexit / Remain - we've now left so it is simply do you think the post-Breixt country will do better with the Trots in charge?

If he voluntarily defers Brexit (i.e. short of Parliament / a court forcing him) he will get hammered from both sides as Brexit-y Tories go to the Brexit party and Remainer Tories look to go Lib Dem to avoid Brexit.

Maybe you are right, arbiter, but I think the effects of no deal will be felt immediately, most people in this country don't want it and  most of those that do haven't thought about what it means.    When there are price rises, shortages of food stuffs long queues at the border, queues to withdraw money and a raft of bad news companies are saving up for if no deal brexit is confirmed they will turn on Boris in a second.

I am almost starting to think I would rather see a catastrophic no deal Brexit happen and for these twots to finally have to admit that it wasn't the smartest idea, than for the UK to remain.

And let's face it, those are probably the only two possible outcomes at this point in time.

I think you're right to prefer that Anna.  Much better than staying and being to blame for the real and made up negatives that go with it.  We would be a pariah - we are already and it wouldn't change.
