Jamila Jamil being queer

Given she's married to a man, assuming she's sexually attracted to women, what does this mean?

I have to keep up with this stuff for my job and usually I feel quite up-to-date, but I'm lost with this one I think.

Honestly? Given how open she is all the time about everything, I can't help but feel that she's just attention seeking. Luckily most of the time I can avoid her because I have nixed my social media.

OK, I get that reaction (and I think it's my initial one too).

But on the actual point, if someone is only attracted to men how can they justifiably call themselves "queer" in the LGBTQI+ nomenclature?  Does it mean something much broader than sexual orientation?

We don't know who she's attracted to (and being married to someone of the opposite sex doesn't automatically mean someone is heterosexual, but they could be bisexual or pansexual). I think the term "queer" is an easy blanket term for "not straight" so who knows. Just convenient that this all comes out (so to speak!) now when she's defending her position for getting a job which people think should have gone to someone else.

The ironic thing is no one cares if she's queer, the job (from what I have read) is to do with ballroom dancing and she has no experience in that and people want someone with experience in that area.

Just as a point of order, she’s not married.

Don’t see why it matters who she’s attracted to whatever show she’s presenting, but don’t like celebrities having to out themselves publicly like this.

Is she worried about cultural appropriation?

Has she properly and diligently unpacked her backpack of privilege?

Is it just the fact that she is an imbecile?

fantastic PR for a show which features an "unscripted voguing contest" given that Jamil is about as popular as Piers Morgan

it sounds as shit as The Masked Singer though tbf and that is ace

This does feel like one of those world's gone mad/I'm so old things.  I feel a right gammon.

I've had to look up (to be sure of what/who they are or modern meaning): Jameela Jamil, unscripted TV programme, voguing and queer.  And she's married to a man.

Like, srsly

Yes feelingchill.  I didn't get how you could be a "judge" on something that's seemingly predetermined albeit unscripted and why this would cause an outcry as it's basically acting (and you don't need to be LGBT to act being a judge).

"I have to keep up with this stuff for my job"

are you a celebrity gossip columnist?

I'm an employment lawyer.

This whole thread was on the basis that she IS NOT attracted to women.  I mean, she might be but there is no evidence of that.

My question is - in the opinion can you call yourself "queer" if you are a woman who is only sexually attracted to men?  Is "queer" broader than that, or in these circumstances only a correct label if she is bisexual?

I reckon I’m queer.

In that I shag anything and everything. Animal, vegetable or mineral.  Do anything, to anything.  - The baby eating bishop of Bath and Wells.

”Never, in all my years, have I encountered such cruel and foul-minded perversity! Have you ever considered a career in the church?”

Why would you assume she’s not attracted to women? She literally just came out.

anyway what chimp said, queer is just an umbrella term meaning not straight cis afaik

The last thing I remember she was a not very good TV presenter on a naff show on T4 that was cancelled. Now she’s everywhere and her opinion is sought and makes headlines.

I think it’s something to do with her:

1. Being a woman.
2. Not being white.
3. Being Asian.

And having a good agent and PR team that can leverage the three as it’s the perfect combo at the moment. She can draw upon all three and exaggerate or “reveal” whenever necessary.

She’s a triple threat.

She was in The Good Place which was a massive worldwide hit.

hth

Yup for some reason totally missed it for three years and was wondering why she was suddenly in the press.  Had no idea she’d moved to LA and become an actress and assumed she was in the twilight zone where most youth TV presenters end up once they turn 30.

Never heard of good place

only heard of her from on here

i googled her last time she is from Hampstead and has had every conceivable advantage in life, not least being attractive

tede

I've been on Queer Twitter to answer this question, so buckle up.

"Queer" is an inclusive term to describe not being heterosexual.  Not being heterosexual is a spectrum, so in this case "Queer" means homosexual (which I assume Jameel is not), bisexual (which she may be) BUT ALSO finding people in one or more sections of the gender spectrum (there are hundreds of them) sexually attractive.

To give you an example, as a "Queer", Jameel could be attracted to men (which she seems to be) and transwomen, but not CIS women.

It is not necessary, therefore, to be "Queer" for Jameel to be attracted to men and women, because women denotes female and is a sex, rather than a gender.

Everyone crystal clear?  Good.

I think what bothers me about her is that she's constantly putting herself in a position of underdog/victim. "oh look I am female, I am not white, I am queer, I have a disability, I have this issue, I have that issue...". It just feels so disingenuous.

So in theory if I think a human being who I view as a man (because he is physically an adult human male) but who identified himself as non binary - that also makes ME queer?

what a load of actual shite

meanwhile have you seen Richard Burgon's latest plans to share intelligence briefings with Labour Party members?

I welcome the forthcoming apocalypse

The cynic in me wonders if she's just decided she's queer to secure this job.  She claims she really came out ages ago because she added a rainbow to her name on Twitter although I thought that just meant you are a supporter of LGBTQ rights.

I think what bothers me about her is that she's constantly putting herself in a position of underdog/victim.

Yeah this is quite annoying when by most people’s standards she really has it pretty good.

So in theory if I think a human being who I view as a man (because he is physically an adult human male) but who identified himself as non binary - that also makes ME queer?

It doesn't have to be a specific person does it?

I mean if you just accept that you might find someone hot who is Questioning - then you're Queer.

Is there even a need for reciprocation / the potential for a relationship?  Presumably all blokes who've ever perved over a lesbian are now Queer?

Its all getting a bit ridiculous for the people who actually have discrimination problems these days isn't it?

I think what bothers me about her is that she's constantly putting herself in a position of underdog/victim. "oh look I am female, I am not white, I am queer, I have a disability, I have this issue, I have that issue...". It just feels so disingenuous.

This feels a bit unfair.  She's hot and fairly successful in her career.

But, partly assuming wikipedia is correct:

1. She's almost certainly had her share of racial and sexual discrimination;

2. She has fairly severe hearing loss even after multiple operations as a child;

3. Has / had labyrinthitis which is potentially a bit of a fooker;

4. Ehlers-Danlos - I don't know if there is any indication how severe but that potentially means she's spent her life in chronic pain and puts her at increased risk if she ever wants to have children;

5. History of anorexia;

6. Severe accident as a teenager that nearly left her unable to walk;

7. Breast cancer 'scare'; and

8. Suicide attempt at 27.

Maybe some of that is played up for attention but I'm not sure it screams "easy life" and if it was an uggo mate working in an office who could list that lot off for you I reckon they'd be viewed as a bit unlucky.

Most of the comments here are toxic.

Anyway, i had never heard of this celeb until RoF ran this discussion.

'Queer' is an umbrella term for s.o. on the LGBT spectrum.

Sounds like she is either Bisexual (another umbrella term), polysexual or pansexiual.

Finally, so what? Live with it.
