My insomnia led me to this superb ‘documentary’ on this extraordinary building.
Designed by a 21 year old Giles Scott (who neglected to use lime) funded by slaver families it is an amazing story.
FIND IT. Superb
There was a tradition at my school of smuggling a watermelon into the cathedral during the Christmas Carol service and passing it down the pews trying not to be the one "caught in possession". You'd be standing there halfway through In the Bleak Midwinter and this fooking great watermelon would appear in your hands. God knows where the thing came from.

This one?

Will definitely watch that. Incredibly imposing both in terms of design and location. Absolutely dominates. Intentionally of course.
Was there last year. First time I'd been inside it for 30 years. Even 'zzette was taken aback by the sheer scale.

That’s the one. Outstanding. I’m going to look out the rest for 3am tomorrow
The architect being a Papist is buried immediately outside it. You’d have thought they could make an exception.

Of course other places, when granted cathedrals, just re-designated existing churches and spent the money on the poor.

The financing slave trader families (Earles etc) presumably felt this a better means by which to wash away the sins of their fathers.

When you learn the ten commandments they always gloss over the other bit about looking after your Hebrew slaves.
"If a man sells his daughter as a slave, she is not to be set free, as male slaves are"
Different times I guess.

I think you should let Tony Robinson know about that for the sequel.
