A 31 year old Adelaide lawyer has scooped the title of Australia's MasterChef, fighting off stiff competition from 23 other hopefuls.

Former Kelly & Co lawyer Adam Liaw resigned from his job as a media lawyer in Tokyo in order to take a shot at the culinary competition. His win over fellow South Australian Callum Hann - giving him the honour of being crowned Australia's second ever MasterChef -  was viewed by a record-breaking 4.5 million Australian audience. Over a million more viewers than tuned into a pre-election debate two hours before. That's proof of the power of a guava snow egg cook-off over politics.

No more timesheets. That's why he's smiling

A surprisingly high proportion of final 24 competitors had a legal background-  including three practising lawyers and one law student. The three lawyers - Peter Kritikides, Claire Winton Burn and Adam Liaw - all reached the top 10. And it was very nearly an all lawyer final before slightly overcooked lamb and some average polenta whipped up for our progressive Governor General sent Ms. Winton Burn packing.

With a cookbook deal as well as $100,000 to fulfil his food dream which according to the MasterChef website is to open a Japanese Izakaya (casual restaurant), it seems likely that Adam won't be trading his kitchen knives back for a timesheet any time soon.
