I think it would suit him quite well to get elected on a hard brexit mandate, publicly push for it - but not to actually take any kind of steps (call a GE the right period of time before the extension runs out?) to really avoid Parliament forcing a revocation.
He gets to play the Brexit saviour card, avoid completely tearing the party apart and win a big swathe of Brexit voters with the argument that it was all the Remainers in Parliament what stopped him.

No, I think May has very clearly been trying to push through a Brexit.
If she wanted to fold on it the opportunity was there back when she lost MV1. She really is deluded enough to think she has a duty to deliver on the will of the people and (probably quite rightly) just doesn't see an alternative to her deal for doing so.
I have a different take on the events. She couldn't fold then (MV1) because that would mean admitting defeat and name would be etched as one. She was maddeningly driven to carve a name for herself (despite her own misgivings about her deal) and tried to sell it as the only solution on the table. What didn't help was her refusal to threaten the hard brexit nutters in her party (who make up incredibly small number) with withdrawal of art 50 notice. She was a coward. But as a career long politician one can't expect her to be radical.
Just revoke Article 50 now and put an end to all this mess. Rabid ignorant leavers can go back to chanting at football matches or knitting stuff and blaming foreigners for all their woes.
A new leader of the Conservative Partly (ie what’s left of it) would have four options:
1) Gove option. Carry on with May’s WA and hope that better execution will get it through.
2) Farage option. Tell EU that we are leaving without a deal. They can wait for it to happen in 31st October, or we could have a chat about it happening earlier
3) Rudd option. ‘Who cares about how we got here. Here’s a bill for another referendum. Two choices a) Remain b) Remain and sign up for Schengen and the Euro
4) Hammond option. ‘This is all a big mistake. I have been right all along. Here is a bill to revoke Art 50.
What a new leader will choose cannot be foretold. A week is a long time in politics.
Oh there is also the Corbyn option ‘Go back to the EU and negotiate a different deal that I can claim is better even if it is actually worse and maybe, or maybe not, have a people’s vote on it . But probably not. Well, perhaps.

so it’s not an option at all for a new Tozza leader
and even if it were, of the four options, it commands by some margin the fewest votes in Parliament and (as Parliament is capable of ruling out no deal) therefore isn’t a viable option in practice either
We vote against the Euro and Schengen and Leavers can claim victory because it's stopping the Euro and unlimited freedom of movement, and the Remainers are just relieved this nightmare is over.
it does make me wonder whether ducks has actually been a remain supporter all along, but as he’s never properly engaged with the subject he got confused early on and thinks brexit means remain. it’s not the first time he has perversely voiced disgust at Brexter attitudes while falsely ascribing them to Remainers
