Madrid can feel a bit rootless - big faceless city in places and always tons of construction. I like it there but if youre looking for a more relaxed break id go to seville.
I've been to both and am in Madrid right now. Madrid edges it. Seville probably better for old town charm, but Madrid has better restaurant (and great range of regional Spanish food) and the Thyssen-B is my favourite museum after MoMA. Amazing single collection.
If you’re looking for just an “urban” city break (restaurants and museums) then Madrid, but with Seville you can make day trips to Cordoba and Alhambra.
I liked Seville more for a holiday but horse for courses, depends how energetic you want to be.. Seville, on the sea, everything cool - Cathedral, gardens of the royal palace, little kiosks on the quays selling fried fish - is together in walking distance. Madrid - far inland, weather harsher in more directions, big busy industrial city with commuters and boring worky stuff. But you can have a good time in either place, you won't go wrong either way.
Love Madrid and have been there loads of times. Always with locals to pay for fanciest food, mind. Not been to sevikke so I will in the custom of rof theow in that barcelona is fooking minging
Another vote for Seville. Loved it. Great food and atmosphere. If you can get to Granada too i would definitely recommend a two city break. The Alhambra is definitely worth a visit.
I looked into it and both Madrid and Seville are in Spain - which of course you vowed repeatedly that you would never visit again because of the Spanish reaction to Covid.
And you did mean that didn’t you? It wasn’t just some shrill, ill considered sounding off I assume?

Never been to Seville, so I have to vote Madrid. I liked Madrid grand in the centre, nice vibe and lots to see just outside.

Madrid needs a local guide to get the best out of it.
Seville is rather nice

Alhambra is about 3hrs from Seville and a dog of a drive (tho did it about 10 years ago during a torrential storm)

It's been 22-23c today. Perfect afternoon for a glass of albariño outside.

Right.
Seville for me Clive. More character and all that. Madrid is a bit ad hoc tbf (which historically makes sense).
However, if it’s only for day/short weekend then Madrid is probably the right answer, if only for the Prado.

“Seville, on the sea”
Eh? That is rather like saying Birmingham is on the sea.

It’s not that near the sea. You can get to Cordoba, Cadiz and Granada/Alhambra relatively easily tho.

I think the takeaway from all of this is you should go to both

Stayed in Madrid for three months; went to Seville a couple of times during that time. Of the two, I’d go back to Seville but not Madrid.

Not necessarily better, but in the armpit occasionally can make a refreshing change.

Seville is lovely, particularly the time of year.
Not a big fan of Madrid but that is possibly coloured by it being the only place I have ever been properly robbed on the street.
