Tartan

There is an article in today's Telegraph re tartan (Decoding tartan, and how to wear it at any age (telegraph.co.uk))

I happen to like tartan a lot, BUT, my question for debate is that: as a non-Scot is it unacceptable cultural appropriation for me to wear tartan?

DISCUSS

No probs, Judo. I happen to be in Edinburgh right now for a few days and of the many people that I have seen wearing tartan of some kind or other, I would guess (judging from their respective accents) that very few of them are native Scots.

it is not appropriation, a key tennant of scottish culture is inclusiveness, it would be a totally alien imported concept to shame people for wearing tartan

see also english or american guys panicing about can they wear a kilt to a wedding

But if that is not the definition of cultural appropriation then what is?

And is cultural appropriation inherently bad, and if not what the circumstances that make it so?

On behalf of my fellows I say have at it.  And tweed.

Only truly grates when fat Americans turn up swathed in tartan or wearing evening dress  pronouncing that they are Scotch and really from Scot-Land.

you're focusing on the cultural instead of the appropriation

it's appropriation to use something freely given and encouraged as a sort of cultural marketing tool

Wearing a kilt to a wedding is usually a good marker that the wearer is a prize tw@t

If the person isn’t even Scottish then they are definitely a fvcking tw@t

Tbh there's this whole thing about lowlanders not really being tartan people either. Hate the whole chocolate box thing. Am sure you'd be welcome renovation to the look jc.

Can we resolve this in the direction of it being ok? I have a Brera cashmere tartan scarf that is so wonderful it makes me positively want there to be bad weather.  I would like to be reassured it is ok with Rof if I continue to wear it.

Christ, half my gmail inbox is guff from House of Bruar.  I bought the dog walking hat from there and now they won't leave me alone.

I try to explain to people how the most english thing you can do is have special clothes every minutely different activity that occurs during your day

but a specific hat for walking the dog is next level

I'm honestly starting to think we need a rof cultural appropriation committee to rule on these on a case by case basis

we're about 5 posts from a russian albino etonian rocking up and declaring he wants rasta dreads

Without wishing to out myself, I belong to one of the few Irish clans with its own tartan.

Wearing someone else's is a bit naff. The sort of thing American tourists would do.

"I really like northern irish kilts."

There's no such thing as a "northern" Irish kilt. But yes, I agree the Irish kilt is superior. More of a dress than a skirt.
