you don't need to ask him to see how much the US wants to get involved in another foreign adventure 

I do not think Israel could have not invaded.  Like any democracy (and probably other systems) it can be controlled by the collective hysteria of its population.  Any leader who simply said that they are putting this down to experience and beefing up the security at the border would not last long even if is the correct way to proceed.
