Rob Key

Has he been sacked as Managing Director yet for this disaster of a World Cup under the coach he hand picked?

Selection (under his appointed Men’s Selector) has been all over the shop. Preparation found inadequate.

Then there’s the fiasco over awarding multi year central contracts to a side that already looks over the hill.

Even Fence Foal must be struggling to defend his hero.

The ODI team he inherited had peaked. It was Morgan’s team let’s be honest.

Don’t think it’s fair to pin this on Mott and I think the coach needs a full cycle between WCs (with his own team) to judge properly.

How’s he going to get his own team if Key gives them all multi year contracts?

There are only 3 players on 3 yr central contracts though.

tbf they have to lock down the best prospects on multi year contracts so they don’t end up on the franchise circuit.

Bob has been scoffing too many full English in the last month to be paying any attention to the World Cup.

The fact that the hapless Mott didn’t know the criteria for qualifying for the Champions Trophy in 2025 says it all about Bob’s sloppy management style.

They couldn’t even manage to play in matching kits.

He did coach the team that won the T20 WC last year so i think he has earned the right to have another go at it

The alternative is that England end up with 2 white ball coaches (Morgan in charge of the 50 over team)

The issue isn’t lack of 50 over domestic cricket: internationals rarely play domestically. For example Kohli hasn’t played a domestic 50 over game since 2013; de Kock 2014; Warner has played 3 domestic 50 over games in a decade.

A far bigger issue was that they hadn’t played ODIs as a team. Malan had opened just 11 times in ODIs and never in Asia. Stokes hasn’t played since the last World Cup. Their last series before the World Cup was IIRC at home v Ireland. In the 2 years preceding the World Cup they played 3 matches in Asia (none in India) and that side featured the likes of Phil Salt, James Vince and Will Jacks. One of the few players who featured regularly (Jason Roy) was jettisoned on the eve of the tournament. He was dropped on the basis of form but there are several others who might have also been dropped on form but had played the format so infrequently it masked their decline.

England haven’t had a clue what their strongest side looks like. That started when they named their original squad only to then backtrack and change it. It continued when they panicked and completely changed the balance of the side v SA only to abandon that idea after one game.

They don’t know what their best team is, they didn’t know what the qualification requirements were for the Champions Trophy, they don’t know how to play the conditions. They’ve gone and awarded multi year contracts to a team where everyone is over 30 and is on course to finish bottom.  This has been an utter fiasco and it goes way beyond Mott, which is why Key needs to be in the firing line.
