There were 2 hour queues to check in at Gatwick on Friday at 0430
and here the lounge is open, the shuttered restaurants are open, and the final empty shop has been taken by a new tenant.
they’ve been upgraded their security scanners
(last Sunday night flight out still being cancelled on regular basis, but that was always the case)

Some airlines allowing drop off of baggage the day before to avoid the long queues on the day.
Don't really know how many people will go for that.

This weekend was the busiest of the year. Notwithstanding the future (woe is me, fuel prices etc), people really want to go away. Holidaying in somewhere expensive and cold in Britain won’t cut it this year.

All the more reason to enjoy my week on the Isle of Wight.

Isnt first thing in the morning always the busiest time at Gatwick?

I think if I turned up at an airport at 4.30am to find a 2 hour queue for check in I’d shoot myself in the head.

They seem to have forgotten how to operate an airline/airport combination.
I hope it's sorted before my epic multi-layover trip to the UK at Christmas.

Weird. I've taken 5 return flights (including 2 intercontinental) since March and zero issues. Only minor issue was booking parking at Heathrow, but just required some cash to be thrown at the problem.

My inside info is that basically a lot of the airlines are losing cabin crew to rivals who are paying huge sign on fees. And that’s why there are having to cancel their flights.
so not unlike law firms then.

But BA usually wins out on cabin crew as the route network is bigger than UK rivals and they literally see the world.

Those “investors” who bought U.K. holiday lets at hugely inflated prices in summer 2020 are going to be in for a tough ride. Sad. Really sad.

The weather here last summer was dreadful, it was obvious then that everyone with the means would look to go abroad this year. I remember saying at the time that so many people holidaying in the UK would end up being a disaster, so much disappointment with the weather lottery. The ariport sh1t is the last straw.
Also:
”I was forced to sleep on the airport floor”
Anyone else fed up of these silly look at me I’m a victim stories? No one is forced to sleep on an airport floor.

Minkie needs a privilege check there
Not everyone can afford a last minute airport hotel. Hth.
It does seem the proper airlines are operating fine and their low cost counterparts are a shambles.

How about the oil airlines?

People I know in the U.K. holiday market are also having a record year as there seems there people want more holidays than are available combined with overseas visitors coming back.

"How about the oil airlines?"
Presumably all boycotted due to their human rights abuses?
I've joined citeh fans in not attending the Etihad on that basis. Kudos to them.

Davos you have missed the point entirely.
No one needs to sleep on an airport floor because if flights are cancelled or it gets to evening and no improvement then just GO HOME its insane to have children hanging around at midnight.
Shit happens

Maybe it is privilege but if people can’t afford a few hundred quid for an emergency hotel should they really be travelling at all? What if something happens out there - lost passport, illness, etc - that means they need some ready cash to bail them out?

Yeah that's called privilege
"Poor people should stay at home"

Nonsense. You have options. Hotel, go home, whatever.
A couple of years ago I had an overnight flight cancelled once I was at the airport, I went straight home. Why hang around?
as for “ poor people should stay at home” oh please is that the best you have??
of course it is irresponsible to head off abroad with your children with no means to deal with a simple emergency, but thats not my point. My point is, no one is “ forced” to sleep on an airport floor and if you choose that for your kids well heh, interesting choice

Yeah I wouldn't but I'm privileged and can afford to get a hotel and know my rights about recovery etc.
Check. Your. Privilege.

Ok Davos is that what I said? What if one of the kids what taken unwell overseas? How would they pay for that while waiting for insurance to kick in? Or they needed a few extra nights away because of the illness? Or they had their passports pinched?

What if you drive two hours home and they announce your flight will now be leaving in two hours?

Having your passports pinched gets free assistance from the local consulate.

Theyre not going to take off in the middle of the night sails

But surely they can pay for a hotel with the compensation they get paid for delayed departure under the EU scheme… oh.

I’m sure they can once the claim is settled in 6 months!
The point is travelling can involve unexpected events which have a cost, especially abroad when you don’t know your rights or things just work differently.

Look
people sleeping on the floor at the airport trying to flee a war zone - needs must. And the sleeping on the floor would be the least of their problems
people chosing to sleep on the floor at the airport going on holiday instead of going home - crazy
It’s not a question of wealth, it’s just common sense
the carriers should be sorting this and getting everyone to hotels, without question, but if not, what are YOU going to do?
What gets my goat is this victim mentality of “forced”, which was a tabloid headline yesterday. You can execise common sense choices for your family.

It obviously depends how far you are from home.
If your flight is cancelled before say 10pm you will always stay on the chance of getting another flight.
With the collection of luggage, transfer back to the car park, and driving home my return journey would be at least 2.5 hours.
And if you are re-scheduled for early the next day you would need to leave again by 3am...
So, going home only really works if you're less than 30 mins from the airport and only have hand luggage.
