I do about 90% of my shopping online. Every so often I order something from a new shop, and even as I’m checking out and putting my details in I’m already mentally thinking about all the extra spam I’m going to get to my inbox . ticking the box that says “I don’t want marketing emails” seems not to make the slightest bit of difference
eg I ordered a cake from hummingbird yesterday. This morning I have 2 new spam emails. Clicked through to unsubscribe. It’s so wearying. I spend half my life unsubscribing from lists
I had unroll.me for awhile but then that turned out to be stalkier than the emails it was managing for awhile so deleted it
how do you manage this? do I *shudder* have to go back to buying things in real shops again?
(and yes this is fvcking boring - apols)

I hear ya, and this is another reason I end up buying everything on Amazon or ebay as at least I know they won't stalk me
real shops are shit too. 'Can I take your email address?' NO, fook OFF

I have a separate gmail account that I use for anything that involves handing over my details to companies. It's a little bit of a pain having to check a separate account to check delivery details or whatever but preferable to having either my work or main personal email bombarded with spam.

Toronto don't tick on the unsubscribe box. The spammers but lists of e-mail addresses and send out stuff to ascertain which accounts are actually active and they do that by tempting you to unsubscribe to show you've read the spam so they can then send you more. Someone in IT told me to stop unsubscribing and the amount of spam reduced because if you just delete stuff they assume your e-mail address is a dead account and take it off their list.

Are you ticking the boxes without reading them properly and opting in instead of opting out?
Because it seems to be more opt in rather than opt out these days.

That’s a good idea madders
fvck the algorithms
sails - that can’t be true. I went for the passive send it to junk mail approach for ages and it just kept coming. Plus now they all seem to have eleventy thousand lists so that you get bombarded from all angles
I thought gdpr was meant to sort this sh1t out
hotnow - what’s wrong with hummingbird? Perfectly acceptable no? (Tho I don’t want to hear from them every 24 hours)

In which case I suggest you just send them a cease and desist e-mail to the email address on their privacy page with the heading "GDPR breach", saying you have not consented to them using your personal data to pester you and if it doesn't stop you'll have no option but to escalate it to the Information Commissioner.

Then save a copy to cut and paste for the next company to try this.

Same with mobile phone numbers. If you don't recognise the caller, don't answer it.
If its genuine they'll leave a message, if not its a spammer/ list broker.

Thanks chambers - captain irrelevant
hotnow I don’t think I’ve had one of their cupcakes for years. Do people still eat cupcakes? I thought they were a fad.
their cakes are perfectly normal - perfect for an acquaintance’s birthday dinner (which is why I was purchasing one, having been lumped with that administrative task)
