Moving to Edinburgh

Considering doing this. Would involve a c. 25% pay cut and paying more tax but I could obviously still afford a much nicer and bigger flat in the City Centre plus could prob airbnb it for a couple of weeks during the festival...

Anything I need to consider, other than the fact it's colder and wetter up there?

Edinb is truly one of Europe's greatest small cities.

It is however at a low ebb right now, as is Scotland more broadly (in different but to a degree linked ways to the UK's overall decline).

I'd still move there if I could probably.

Weather is a lot chillier than London, but not that much damper.

I loved living in edinburgh (early 90s).  If you're central enough to walk everywhere it's great.  Naff when the festival is on, but just plan around it.

It's colder than London but not particularly wet (east coast).

I bought a place in Edinburgh but due to work I split my time between there and London. There are family reasons why Edinburgh. As to buying a city centre flat, this is essentially the most expensive area in Scotland to buy a flat and the competition can be fierce. Understand that the process of bidding and buying in Scotland is different to England and the outcome of this is that you should view the figure on a listing as a starting point and the question is usually how high above the asking do you need to go. Parking is and always has been awful in Edinburgh so make sure you look at this before committing to somewhere (note that you may be committed at the bid stage). I actually like living in Edinburgh. It is less intense than London and smaller so you can actually just walk around it. There are sufficient bars and restaurants to keep you interested. Similarly there is a steady stream of theatre and gigs etc. The size does have another factor that may be less enticing for you which is that it can be a bit parochial and there is a bit of everyone knowing each other, but tempered by people moving there from outside of Scotland. Access to the countryside is a definite plus and a couple of hours driving will have you in the Highlands. As I’m not around all the time I do rent out my place during the festival and if you have a decent place in the centre this can be some good money. There is a new licensing scheme for short term lets, but you can apply for an exemption for 6 weeks in 12 months.

What Kimmy says is true about the weather and never assume it being sunny means that it is warm.

i love edinburgh and would love to live there

my most guilt-inducing plan is moving as soon as my final aged relatives pass on and being living in the city will no longer come with an incumbent responsibility to regularly visit and care for them

So much anger and hatred. For so many things.

Have you considered seeing someone about this?

Obviously do feel free to insult me personally if this is a little close to the bone and you’d rather not discuss it.

Edinburgh is a great city.  Do it. Can still wear a watch and not terribly stabby.

Buuuuutttttt, I confess to prefer spending time in Glasgow.  When together, we tend to stay in Glasgow.  When it's just Mrs D on her own, Edinburgh.  We have more friends in Glasgow as they tend to be less itinerant and a touch more raucous at dinner/out.

That being said, Glasgow is undergoing one of its cyclical lows/chrysalis moments and the city centre is due a revamp.  Should make it even more fun in due course.  And much cheapness as at today.

I enjoyed Glasgow - I worked there for about 6 weeks. A few years ago now it was when they had that awful bus crash in the square near to Christmas. People would tell me Glasgow was nicer to live and Edinburgh nicer to visit.

Wouldn't need to learn Scots law. It would be a regulatory role, rather than transactional though so quite a change overall...

I find Scotland absolutely freezing and I'm northern. How on earth does a person from balmy London cope up there? Hard no to a Scottish winter for me. Lovely to visit though.

What everyone said about the weather. Don't underestimate the difference between the warm South of England, and the dark damp Lowlands of Scotland. Even the Highlands or Islands, although colder, would be brighter and drier. It is miserable if there are several days every week when you can't go outside without getting soaking wet.

Miss being with other Tories?! Lol. I live in the London Borough of Hackney. You get as many Tories to the pound where I live as you do in Edinburgh central.

we should have some respect for LA and not simply talk about using his body like a piece of meat stud-style, for slaking rofettes, thirst for girthy horse-flesh.
