For those of us who have reached a certain age, when you wake up in the middle of the night at, say, 3 am, are you generally able to stop your brain from latching onto and tackling questions related to something going on at work? I mean it doesn't have to be an overwhelming project/deal and you may have it generally under control during the day, but it has a lot of moving pieces that you need to keep on top of and multiple small issues you are in the middle of ironing out. Again, nothing that should be causing panic (and it's not), but I find it very hard to keep my 3 am brain from automatically trying to resolve things and strategizing and mapping out contingency plans.

This happens to me most nights.  I lay there for 10 minutes saying to myself don't pick up your phone, don't...then pick up my phone and surf sh1te for sometimes up to an hour.  And have to admit RR is right, once I knock one out i usually drift off pretty quickly.

Rarely limited to work — if it is it’s more around clients or lack thereof rather than deals — and normally spans a whole range of stuff from kids to my wife’s and parents illnesses

But I normally go for a piss and gulp some water out of the tap like a dog and then am abe to go back to sleep

Yes meditation sleep music or talk down. A glass of milk if you drink it.  If i have been awake for an hour I will take a couple of ibuprofen. I find the sleep issues the most difficult part of aging and am on a mission to address it.  Apparently this is caused by a surge in cortisol.

When you wake and toss and turn try this:

Lie comfortably on your back with your arms by your side or across your middle. Like a knight on the tomb.

Breathe slowly, holding your breath a few seconds before breathing out. Just keep at it, it is very relaxing. Concentrate on the breath, in and out.

You may fall asleep like this or you might be able to roll over without breaking the spell to fall asleep.

Dont worry about snoring - if you’re awake you’re not snoring anyway, right?

Sweet dreams.

Gentle radio chat helps me. I listen enough to switch off from thinking but not enough to keep me awake. Gardening shows are perfect actually, farming today, that sort of thing. Nothing with a storyline. Also agree with Minkie, shavasana works well too.
