Before they come to blows in the smash mouth thread, let's settle this the manly rof way.

who would you rather made you a mix tape of their fave tunes?

wouldn’t impugn cookie’s knowledge of real music, but he needs to stick to his brief. On anything pop or rock he is an absolute gape tart.

the bit in Slow Horses where Min has got Coldplay jammed on repeat in his car is a televisual all time high point. I find coldplay perfectly listenable, to be clear, but I find it a stretch to imagine anyone actually *liking* them

I was listening to Parade (the Cherry Moon soundtrack) last evening. Am working through my Prince collection. May go for that symbol album this evening.

Unless I go for Taylor Swift.

Laz famously has terrible taste in music. Cookie's is generally OK, although his worrying fixation with Miki Berenyi and a penchant for Simply Red make this a close call.

Re Coldplay, Chris being a Bolton fan, their best work is his swooping, soaring tribute to Big Sam:

Allar-, Allar-, Allardyce

Allar-, Allar-, Allardyce

Allar-, Allar-, Allardyce

WOAH-OH-OH-OH-OH-OOOH

I would actually argue, of. Coldplay, that while their median song - Clocks, perhaps -  fulfils Strutter’s description, they do occasionally get it very right indeed. The song that made them, Yellow, is of course one of them - most bands’ breakthrough single is their best song - and yes so is Paradise, and Viva la Vida, all absolute diamonds.

with regard to “Paradise”, this NME review is stereotypically pseudy and sceptical but very rightly puts its finger on what is best about Coldplay’s best songs: the uniting of people behind music that makes it all feel better. You can criticise them but you first have to accept this basic facts.

that’s because u r wrong

they’re not “a good band” but their best is very good and they have a uniting everyone in hyde park with their lighters in the air quality that, frankly, a lot of “better” bands don’t have and wish they did

the problem with music snobs is that they r more snobby than ne other run-o-the-mill snobs

my favourite music snobs r those that sneer at “popular” music cos they really only r7 classical style

popularity is an unduly underr7ed measure of artistic quality across all mainstream art 4ms 2bh

it’s the most frequent mistake made by those who consider themselves amateur experts

CM is the Jagger of his era, more interested in being a ‘cultural’ figure playing the biggest shows rather than doing anything really interesting. Whilst telling everyone how good he is. Except of course he has no Keef, Utter balls. I doubt however he’ll be tearing it up at 80 like Jagger will be for the telly in Hackney tomorrow afternoon. ‘Rock’ music as a cultural force or power is well past it. Pop music is utterly disposable. But all the other types are better than ever.

I’ve been listening to Prince a lot lately and he’s better than both of them. Write the theme tune, play the theme tune, sing the theme tune, shag the lead actress.

CM is the Jagger of his era

FFS. I'm not a stones fan but Jagger has/had charisma spewing out of every pore whereas Chris is an over coached wet blanket.

Jarvis was the Jagger of our era. Chris Martin is Cliff Richard.

can see what cookie is getting at here tbftbf

Stones easily the weakest of the sixties Big Brit Three, and Jagger has always been a bit of a. cock. That said, I can also see the Jarvis analogy.
