Jewish woman's relief

I can’t remember ever feeling this emotional after a British election before.  Overwhelmingly, I feel relief. Sheer relief. That an overwhelming majority of my country wasn’t prepared to throw my minority community to the wolves. That I can unpack my metaphorical suitcase

" Sebag Montefiore

Britain has spoken and it is the decent country we prayed it was. For Jewish people faced w such unBritish racism this has been a nightmare. We so appreciate those noble nonJews who dared to support us like those signed letters etc. Thank you. We will never forget this."

"Now for the extraordinary twist of fate. The yahrtzeit (anniversary of death in the Jewish calendar) for Menasseh ben Israel is 14 Kislev. 14 Kislev this year fell on Thursday, the day of our General Election."

(Here goes with a post-election, post-Shabbat tale of providence and pride.) In 1651, Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel came to London from Amsterdam to ask Oliver Cromwell to readmit the Jews to England, from where they had been banished for more than 350 years.

“Grant unto us” he wrote, “free exercise of our religion, that we may have our own synagogues, and keep our own public worship, and we shall pray for the happiness and peace of this, your much renowned and puissant Commonwealth”.

In 1656, thanks largely to this intervention, Cromwell readmitted Jews to England under his protection. A century later, the first of my Jewish family arrived in England - like Menasseh ben Israel, from Holland.

13.4 million Germans voted for Hitler in the 1932 presidential election (which he didn’t win). But by then his anti semitism was very obvious to anyone who cared to see.

If however you mean that lots of folks thought it was just bluster and not going to be acted on then yes.

"I'm fairly sure that the people of Germany thought something similar before Hitler came to power."

Don't be fooking daft. Let's look at the factors leading up to the rise of Hitler - WW1, Great Depression, Germany's defeat, Reparation payments, hyper inflation of the Mark, an inept central banker at the helm for a long time (who colludes with Hitler for survival), failure of political parties, failure of state institutions. Hitler had been blaming the jews since birth.

Brexit and Corbyn's short sightedness due to his political position on the Israel-Palestine hardly compares as all of the above.

Britain has and will always be welcoming of Jews. They are an important part of British society and brings great wealth and talent.

Reports from Labour door knockers throughout the election reported numerous mentions of anti-semitism coming from people up and down the country. Given there are only about 250,000 Jews in the country it suggests that quite a few other people were pissed off about it.

I CAN’T ABIDE ANTI-SEMITISM: COULD NEVER VOTE FOR CORBYN AND IT WAS A RELIEF TO BE ABLE TO VOTE FOR BRAVE BORIS INSTEAD...

... WHO HAPPILY FEELS THE SAME WAY AS I DO ABOUT THE MUSLIMS

Others have tried to point this out, wilfred.

BrexitBrexit thinks he's on to a comedy winner and appears intent on continuing.

Despite the fact everyone got bored with it at the latest 3 months ago and now just think he's a twunt.

OH DEAR OH DEAR, HAVE I UPSET SOME ANTI-SEMITIC REMOANERS?!?

SORRY ANTI-SEMITES BUT WE WON AND YOU LOST!!

... AND NOW WE'RE GOING TO DEAL WITH YOUR LITTLE IMMIGRANT FRIENDS: SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN GETTING A BIT TOO COMFORTABLE IN THIS GREAT NATION, EVEN TREATING IT AS IF ITS THEIR OWN COUNTRY

IT ISN'T.
