"Isn’t the possibility of border checks in a few years’ time better than the certainty of checks on 31 October?"

A very sage question.

Outside the FT (which is of course pro-remain) all these articles lack any substance to back up their claims.

For example, it is true that somehow the North and Ireland currently deal with the VAT difference without a hard border.  (but 20% vs 23% seems unlikely to cause a huge smuggling problem)

What about when the UK is outside the customs union and VAT becomes refundable?

for once ducks is right

parl could have approved may’s deal multiple times and then we’d be well out

also wot ray sed. the only people convinced by these arguments against the backstop benign necessary are those who would never ever be convinced about brexit because it’s finger in the ears tribal dogmatism

varadkar’s right - take the pain now, that’s what is in the Irish interest. he couldn’t givva fook about little englanders and why should he

The Brexiters could have approved May's deal and we'd be out, but they wouldn't because they are holding out for no deal, despite there being absolutely no mandate for it.

Blame them.

Queenie:

One senior official says he stopped civil servants preparing one as he was fearful it might leak.

He definitely banned civil servants from making any preparations of any kind for a leave vote. Same with the Scottish independence referendum. We weren't even allowed to put Brexit clauses in our contracts.

Blame them and those who refused to accept the referendum result for their intransigence. Also those who wanted to play politics rather than constructively oppose the government's plans.

Parliament is not fit for purpose.

I'm one of the most ardent remainers you can imagine and I would accept a deal that meant we leave the EU but the Irish border remains open and the economy is protected. I imagine the vast majority of remainers would accept that.

The MPs pushing no deal are the reason why we are where we are today. They have blocked anything less than what they see as an ideologically pure Brexit (despite having no mandate for it) and are holding the rest of us to ransom.

no-one, and by no-one I mean not one single person, refuses to accept the referendum result

its this sort of rabid bullshit from Brexters that is creating great divisions and entrenching positions

that’s exactly my point

he’s using deliberately obscure and provocative language to enrage fellow brexters, rather than presenting remaoaner views accurately and unambiguously
