I don't drink beer so cannot answer this but

how would you feel after drinking 9 pints of lager.

Also is it bad to drink 3 or 4 pints a day?

A friend on mine went to the doctor bc he is suffering from terrible vertigo and his cross bc the GP is making him do a liver functioning test and telling him off about his boozing.

9 pints over how long?  Any meals interspersed?  Would be drunk but probably not falling over, if it was an all-pm sesh and had had a decent dinner in there.  Next day would be tough.

Clerghers, when out, I order

- Lucky Saint - weirdly, I don't like alcoholic beers, but when ice cold, I enjoy Lucky Saint

- Sparkling water

- Kombucha

- Dalston cherry soda

- Coffee

- Ginger ale

If you are out with the working class lads and have a means of getting home that doesn't involve you driving, 10+ pints for 4-4.5% lager is common

I generally feel a bit drunk

But fine the next morning if a little sluggish

I find I drink far more in a week if I have a few pints a day instead of a big sesh

He is an ex public school boy classical architect, if that makes a difference.

Ponce like that is probably dead after nine pints. Probably had a "tactical chunder" half way through.

There are definitely some times when I think that a glass of wine would be nice but I think that when I resume, I am going to cut out the pointless booze.

I also love that I now sleep like a baby.

I would be very drunk, but still alive. Over a full day with meals it's not totally unreasonable. It's a lot in just an evening. The next day would be a write-off.

Yes 3 or 4 pints is too much for daily consumption levels.

If it's 9 pints of decent lager, pretty grim.

If it's 9 pints of who knows what is in this lager, super grim.

3-4 pints per day every day is super grim territory, you're alcoholic at that level and will be dramatically shortening your lifespan

medley that is not true (1) you can drink way too much without being an alcoholic (2) alcohol risks increase as you drink more but the idea that your life span will defintely be "dramatically shortened" is wrong.  People seem to have a problem distinguishing between risks and certainty.

Guy -- I like your consistently bullish attitude to alcohol. It's nice to see in this day and age. But a bottle of day of 12% wine (and hardly any red wines fall into that category these days -- they're mostly 13% plus) is 9 units a day or 63 units a week. That's got to be harmful, unless you are doing all the right things otherwise -- diet, exercise, etc

I find I drink far more in a week if I have a few pints a day instead of a big sesh

I'm the opposite. If I drink nothing all week and then finally have access to alcohol, I am much more likely to go for it than if I have had a glass or two on a couple of days earlier on in the week

As regards sleep (and alcohol is sleep's enemy number one), the key thing is to drink earlier in the day, ideally no later than 18:00. This method allows you to process all the alcohol before you go to sleep. My sleep quality very rarely drops below 85 (according to my Fitbit watch thingy), if I drink (sensibly) 4-5 hours before bedtime

As above Canute, it increases risks, but at that level there is absolutely no certainty it will cause harm.   Indeed a famous large scale medical study concluded that equivalent of a bottle of wine a day does not even increase risks of ill health - this was a very large study following doctors over a long period of time.   Now,  this study has been largely discredited and most people would accept that 60 units of alcohol a day increases risks - but this is not the same  as definitely causing harm.   You need to drink more than this to be in the certainty category.

IRL Davos is more of a lager-top chap.

I only now drink lager on  a very warm day like today, before dinner - there's no way I could drink 9pts now - 4-5 would probs be max.

Not sure of marshalls point but presumably he is projecting

Nothing wrong with drinking the drink you like though. It's very beta human to drink something you hate in case people think worse of you

What I meant Canute was if I go out and have 3 pints it doesn't stop me doing the same the next day and the next day and the next day etc. Can happen if the work diary is busy with client meetings etc. So I probably average 20 pints a week

But if I go and have a sesh of 10 I don't fancy a beer for at least a week

It's so refreshing isn't it, and not too sweet.

Sour but not too sour.

Sweet but not too sweet.

Thirst quenching.

FACE WHY DON'T YOU JUST MARRY DALSTON CHERRY SODA.

If I could, I would.

“dramatically shortening your lifespan” is way over egging it; as discussed passim there are people who get by drinking three times that for years.

It’s not an optimally healthy level of consumption tho

100 pints in a week as a one off challenge is meritorious. Almost 15 a day! Fark

In belgium they love a big round goblet style glass on a long thin stalk. Certainly, every time I head to bruges I find a top heavy local blonde to keep me company.

Judy I feel I can answer this question and nice to meet you although of course we have never knowingly met.

After 9 pints all men are really quite hooned and will all talk at least 50% louder to each other. 10% of those men will consider themselves ok. They are fooling only themselves. The next day you feel disastrous - sluggish, sweating, and a general cycle of self loathing and disgust. That could be just me though.

One great way round this little pickle is to only drink out of those massive German stein glasses - that way you've only had one drink instead of 3 pints. Hopefully this helps your pal.

People get extremely confused by health warnings and advice.

Government health warnings are based on statistics and on a macro level the effects of certain things can look devastating - 1000s of early deaths and all sorts other nasties.  On an individual level it may just mean a small percentage risk.  This means we have got the stage where people like Medley, who clearly have a dodgy grip of statistics believe that 3 pints a day means a certain early death.   It may cause problems sure but chances are it will have no significant impact whatsoever.

He has a drink problem so may not present as even being drunk. Fact he is a middle class professional in London just means he can hide it in plain sight.

What Merkz said. I drank roughly the equivalent of 9 pints on Saturday but it was 5 pints (of 5% lager) over 3 hours at lunch followed by a nap, followed by a bottle of wine with food in the evening. Walked the dog at 10.30pm and tucked up in bed by midnight.

Probably wasn't 100% on Sunday when I woke up at 8.30am but certainly not dying. Well enough to play a bit of football with the kids and enjoy it later in the day.

If it had been 9 pints between 8pm and 1am followed by not enough sleep then the following day would have been brutal and I probably wouldn't have remembered getting home/going to bed.

I'm very well Judy tip top just now actually

I think guys pretty much right as I see it - my grandparents were massive drinkers and lived to about their mid 80s. Beer is really not so bad its spirits that are going to mess you up over the long term. But hey I'm not a doctor.

I think I remember reading cheggers autobiography where he said he bought 9 litres (litres!) Of voddie a day, 3 of which he put in places his wife would find them to tip them down the sink. He had a litre in the shower in the morning, and ingeniously stashed one in the front hedge for his morning commute. That's a man with a thirst.

you can't drink 3 pints a day and be fit. period.

And yet the likes of Ian Botham, Ben Stokes, Andrew Flintoff, George Best, Gazza, Tony Adams all had lengthy careers at the highest level.

If you drink 3 pints per day (as in literally 7 days per week) for your adult life you will not be in good shape.

It's that amount of alcohol that's the problem I argue (with the calories as a secondary problem).

A bit of alcohol per adult day can work out OK I think, depending on other factors and your genes.

But I just can't see 3 pints of beer every day as workable if you want to reach, say, 85 in OK shape

I reckon there will be many examples (and I know a few) of people who do that who will be in good shape if they are healthy in other areas of their lives.  I would say 3-4 pints or a bottle of wine a day is pretty much an amount that many (but not all) people will get away with.   Whatever government health warnings say most people that suffer ill health through alcohol drink considerably more than that.

If you drink 3-4 pints or a bottle of wine a day and are otherwise in good health and fit, you are the exception. That is a lot of booze to be putting away. At the very least you are likely to be overweight just from the additional calories
