Horizon/Post Office scandal

£600k each in compensation

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/sep/18/post-office-horizon-scandal-victims-compensation

Don’t think this is anywhere near enough for all those lives ruined. absolutely disgraceful and people should be doing gaol time

But don’t worry;

‘After the scandal, it emerged that about £1.6m in bonus payments had been made to executives’

Several executives at PO and Fujitsu, in house lawyers at PO, and their external solicitors and Counsel, definitely need a lengthy stay in HM Prison Dartmoor for their criminality.

It's absolutely not enough.  Hundreds of innocent people sold their houses, were sent to prison (ffs), committed suicide. It's such a massive scandal and the details of it simply beggar belief.  Paula Vennells should be prosecuted along with everyone else who knew Horizon was at fault.

I very much care. I’m glad the scandal is so widely known about that being a victim is tantamount to a badge of honour.

Post Offices hold a special in my affection. Yes. Really.

I hope this blows up as a result of the current (I think?) various investigations into in house lawyers and Fujitsu folk - then resulting in clamour for a bit more realistic “compensation” for those still alive whose lives (and their spouses, family, friends lives) were destroyed. We’re all sinners but how the fvck do the people responsible live with themselves?

I think so ‘curious Bertha’.
The thing about us mongrel Brits is that we know a wrongun and we know a rightun.
Post Office counter bods are rightuns.

It is a start. i have been following this case from the very very very early days when it was only in Computer Weekly. Lives were ruined. Innocent people were accused of terrible things and some jailed. It was in part caused by people not using common sense and saying - computer says X therefore computer is right which is never the right way to go.

Ich finde die „neugierige Bertha“ so. Das Besondere an uns Mischlings-Briten ist, dass wir ein Unrecht und ein Recht kennen. Die Schalter der Postämter sind berechtigt

Obviously non lawyers should carry the can too but there were hundreds of ignored opportunities not to continue being part of these miscarriages ESPECIALLY THE LAWYERS

How or why the SRA and Bar Council have felt the need to hold off prosecution for these obvious violations of professional conduct and how any of these scumbags are still holding PCs /members of Inns is an ongoing egregious failure of mission

It is absolutely mind blowing but tragically typically British institutional behavior first by the PO then the Government and now the SRA/Bar Council

people should be struck off and in jail for this horrific fustercluck , end of.

But no, “let the enquiry, run it’s course “ what an professional joke the UK has become.

PS I seriously hope most reject this obvious attempt to sweep this away before the next election. If it mattered they should ensure there were proper and efficient professional consequences/ prosecution AND THEN offer compensation . This way just feels like a classic institutional response and the next step would be to ignore the recommendations from the enquiry…cos all the victims will have been “taken care of “ and it was “all so long long ago…”

Agreed, the victims’ stories are tragic  - careers ruined, suicides, prison time, marriages breaking down, people losing their houses

and yet the people who should be doing prison  gaol time get honours and bonuses

the state of the nation

I’m not saying it isn’t. I just don’t think it’s landed with the wider populace as an issue. It’s a very good example of what the country has become. Apart from the sainted NHS nobody gives a fvck.

But that’s when the regulators role becomes even more crucial, no?

To maintain professional standards regardless (even when the public aren’t screaming about it)

Yes indeed. And there is no effective regulation of any service or utility at all. Look at the water companies, as just one example. Then the trains of course. Decades of sell offs and no oversight. Massive subsidies that in effect go straight to shareholders. It just wouldn’t happen in Europe. Britain is a poor and feudal country that has chosen to go backwards. Time for Work Experience and his family business to leave.

Its of a peice with the guy who served years in jail on a false conviction of rape being charged bed and board from the prison service out of his compensation.    I dont think alot of these people can be human

Meh, I'll wait till the report of the independent enquiry thanks.  Far to much absurd hyperbole on this thread, and a shameful lack of comprehension as to what an unsafe conviction or criminal aquittial means - it defintely does not mean someone was innocent of wrongdoing, simply that the case wasn't proven to the requisite standard.  Ironically the problems with the Horizon software will not only have led to people being wrongly convicted, it will lead to guilty people getting away with it, and then recieving a load of 'compensation' on top. Still, rather that than the genuinely innocent getting short-changed.

Warren have you just avoided all the serious analysis of this?

An organization with powers to prosecute, continued to do so for years after C suite executives knew it was based on a lie. Oh and they financially incentivized employees to widen the prosecutions (again) after aware of the lie

I am happy to recommend some serious journalism about this but doubt that you’re interested

Warren I can only assume you have not looked into this properly.     We now know the discrepancies arose because of software malfunction there is no reason to think, on any standard of evidence, that these people could have been guilty.  This not a case where the evidence against them was just "unsafe" it is was wrong.

Warren: sometimes a rotten pile of corruption propagated by regulated professionals is just a  rotten pile of corruption propagated by regulated…..

‘continued to do so for years after C suite executives knew it was based on a lie’

Indeed Asti

plus the taxpayer must now cough up to right their wrongs while they trouser bonuses and collect honours

they should be prosecuted and, without wanting to prejudge the outcome too much, gaoled
