HMRC Investigation Scam

Anyone else had the scam phone call with an American recorded voice informing them that HMRC has opened an investigation and that if you don't pay a warrant will be issued for your arrest?

I've had it several times and pressed "1" to speak to an agent out of interest to see how quickly they asked for my account details.  Instead of being put through to an agent the call just ends so are they trying to steal info from my phone in the phone seconds that I'm apparently on hold?  If not, I can't see what the point is.

In that case Zero they'll be enjoying a fascinating discussion of flying freeholds although slightly muffled and dark as my phone is under a pile of paper on my desk.

It just goes silent and the call ends which seems rather pointless.  I at least expected to be given details to make an emergency payment to to avoid being arrested.

My accountant is my agent for dealing with HMRC so the only direct dealing I ever have is the letter to tell me my tax code for the year.

I've certainly been told not to click on "unsubscribe" with spam e-mails as they use that to check the e-mail account is alive so they can send even more spam.

I got the call earlier today and hung up as soon as I heard the recorded voice.

they would do a lot better with these scams if they were more convincing with the process, incidentally, random arrest warrants is not really how hmrc rocks...

which leads me to ask a question... I have BT Broadband... periodically it disconnects itself... Twice I have had calls with an indian voice telling me they are BT engineers and they've detected a problem.  Both times the call went dead, not hung up, the line collapsed...

So I have the problem complained about, but I really don't know if it's BT calling...

Minkie it's also the fact that you know an HMRC recorded message will be in a regional accent like Belfast and not a middle American accent which alerts you before they even mention arrest warrants.  Also HMRC would write to you with that kind of thing rather than bothering to call.

Doggers just phone BT on a number which you know is genuine (say one off genuine account correspondence) and ask if there is a problem.

Doggers,

If theres one thing I know about BT, they NEVER, EVER, EVER ring you to say theres a problem with your service. The procedure is, you ring them, not the other way round, several times, and then nothing much happens.

even if they did detect a problem and alert you surely it would be Openreach anyway.

Take no notice of these calls.

What NTF said.

in unrelated news, as I walked to the taxi rank this afternoon a really swish mazarati drove past - last three on the license plate were Ntf. Made me chuckle wryly.
