Yes anon. Basically she had an affair (the mom) with one of the deceased who was a young lad. She tried to break it off- he got nasty and threatened to send sexual material involving the 2 of them to her family unless she paid him 3K.
She told her daughter who got some local roughs involved. The blackmailer was lured to a meet to pick up the money. His innocent friend was driving. They got suspicious drove off but were chased and crashed.
No sympathy for the blackmailer and think sentences seem pretty high.
the callousness of the daughter in particular, and her comfort spieling outright lies, and her sheer level of criminal enterprise, are all quite shocking. She’s not a kid either, she’s 24 (older than her mum’s lover boy, I note, and said to have been rather disapproving of their dalliance).
the sentence for the mother seems a bit high given that she was herself (as the judge acknowledged) the victim of blackmail, she didn’t actually come up with the scheme, and from what I gather, intention to kill was not proven. I imagine intent to commit GBH was established with regard to the deliberate ramming of the car off the road. From what I’ve read, the primary purpose of the meeting was to take the guy’s phone, although giving him a kicking may have been on the agenda from the start.
However the mum was party to some of the most callous elements of the story including the failure to call the emergency services while the two victims burned to death. Also, as the judge pointed out, I’d still prob have given her min twenty rather than twenty six but I can’t say I am riven by sympathy for her,
I do feel a bit of sympathy for the blackmailer, as the penalty for his offence isn’t to be burned to death in your car. But I agree that morally he at least had the right to expect a good kicking. His mate tho, I feel so sorry for that lad, not involved in the affair at all until his pal presumably said hey, these guys owe me some money, they’ve said they’ll pay me back if I meet them at tesco’s at 1am, would you mind giving me a ride and some backup?
