Gen Zer in my department has just quit

To pursue something she is passionate about instead. (She has no job lined up.)

She is probably on £40-50k per year fresh out of uni.

I envy her tbh. Is this just how Gen Z approach life?

All this shows is that we tax income too high and wealth too low. As Ive been saying for about 20yrs.

We have now succeeded in recreating a Victorian society where your financial and life prospects turn entirely on the wealth owned by your parents.

Im surprised that this universlly unacknowledged  truth is not yet widely recognised in our culture.

Boomers and Gen X cling onto a sentimental attachment to the meritocratic values and ideas of their youth long after their fiscal and monetary policies have killed them and buried the body.

Grr I really want to do this. People persuade me to do this all the time (“I did it and I was fine”…“you’ll get a new job so easily… you’ll never have a better chance…” etc) and when you delve a little bit further into them, you always, ALWAYS find, that they actually have shit tons of cash stuffed away (or expected massive inheritances) such that they never really have to work again. It’s very annoying.

The Gen Zer has a luxury most people of her age don't have and never will.

Ditto when Gen X were her age; most gen Xers graduated into recession in late 80s and early 90s.

Gen myself and no better off now than when I was in my early 20s

Not having stellar grades since I was in the cradle is not the only factors.

Thing is, if I’d slaved like a khunt in a job I hate for 20 years starters I’d want my kids to be perfectly placed to be rentier loafers. It would be the least I could do. Whilst controlling all aspects of their lives, natch. Legacy innit.

The key is not to accept the misery to start with, either by being a rock star or marrying money, maybe being a superstar DJ or crime novelist (the only sort that make proper money) and let’s face it who’s managed that? Exactly. 

So the moral of the story is don’t be a khunt but max your god given talents. Because if you end up in the professions  you’ll encounter numerous talentless w**kers who will sap your life force and yes your life for decades without end until you lose the will to live, and then the actual physical life force. 

And your kids lives might have some meaning too.

What the current crisis will end is the luxury of extended leave and being able to return to the same job. The market simply won’t support it. So by all means kids go and find yourselves, but it will be on BOMAD’s dime.

Paid sabbaticals are like hen's teeth nowadays anyway. If you mean unpaid sabbaticals, any worker with any nous will negotiate it into their contract. And if they really can't, they'll just take it anyway, and return to a different job. The days of The Man telling us what to do are over. One of the few ways in which society has progressed over the last couple of generations is the power given to employees. And that's thanks to the strength of the labour movement (which it's so fashionable to disparage).

Canary Worf bang on the money about this. The City is no longer a place for grafters. It's where boomers' comfortably off children can offer some return for the £250k in school fees before having a mid-life crisis and living off the inheritance.

You should if it basically stops the economy advancing or have any sense of equality of opportunity. 

The current govt has cemented it by withdrawing funding for education and removing things like Sure Start centres that were intended to intervene in disadvantaged children's lives. The UK spends 3% off GDP on state education, but 6% when you add in private funding. 

BTW if you have children and want an unpaid sabbatical just use parental leave. 18 weeks in total for each child under 18 and up to 4 weeks a year per child. Not advertised widely by law firms for obvious reasons.

Dux if you think employees have any sort of power at all you’re sadly deluded. Any relative flexibility and leverage is temporary and dependent on the economic cycle. There is currently a massive correction underway and sadly, as nanaman observes, it’s the haves that continue to benefit. 

Yes a massive correction in favour of employee power.  Three years ago I'd have had a fight to work from home part of the week and now I can come and go as I like.

Not sure if said Gen Zer was flirting with me earlier when I told her I was sad she was leaving and she said "I know I wished we had had the opportunity to  work together - you always made [practice area] look so sexy!"

 

I shouldn't give it a second thought should I? I mean she wasn't even old enough to vote in the Brexit referendum...

Don't get me wrong, Cookie. The market is imo gradually moving towards empowering employees, but there's still a hell of a long way to go. Part of it is mindset. Join a Trade Union, know your rights, don't be afraid to enforce them, and fight for better.
