Brompton. Holds its value, good gearing. Based on watching others it seems to have the best folding action and fits in between the back to back seats on SWR trains. There's a shop near Queensway Tube that does up second hand ones. You can hire them from close to St Pancras if you want to try one out for a couple of days.

Change of commute means I'll be bookending a train journey with a route that would be far quicker on a bike rather than any other mode of transport so it seems like the only sensible option (even if my sex life goes down like the Hindenburg as a result).
Don’t buy a road bike, get a decent quality commuter hybrid.
As it happens I actually have a very nice one for sale for not very much money.
Trek DS 6.something, can’t remember what. Fully kitted out with upgraded gears, comfy saddle, slots for two water bottles and a pump, under seat waterproof bag which contains a spare inner and a (admittedly fairly rudimentary) cable lock that doesn’t even get into the silver bracket but is ok for just general storage while you input into the shops.
Original cost was around £550 for the bike plus another £500ish for all the upgrades and accessories. The bike box it is in was about £300 and is usable in international travel - British airways take it as standard if you fly business class.
All yours for £200. And that is a sodding bargain my friends.
Theyre not as portable as the hype suggests because they’re heavy and more unwieldy than a wheely trolley on packed stations. They unfold randomly if you haven’t quite put the seat down far enough. I was covered in bruises every time I used mine.
On London roads they’re a fooking deathtrap. Narrow small wheels pick up every single bump or dip in the crappy road surfaces. I almost got thrown off a few times due to this.
Sold mine this year and that was the only benefit. Paid 1k new on cycle to work and recouped 800 5 years later.
I bought and used a brompton a handful of times about 20 years ago before flogging it. Much like Baily says it was a total fvcking pain in the ar8e to lug about on the train and sh1t to ride when you get off the train. Essentially a commute that requires you to ride a bike after you get off a train is such an utterly sh1t commute that it's not worth seriously contemplating.

My suggestion is to not buy one, because they're camper than a row of pink tents. Buy a proper road bike instead.

The benefit of a Brompton is you can take it into the pub with you and then if necessary bung it in the back of an uber.
