Every time you think that the Americans have gone about as mental as they can be...

... they go ahead and surpass themselves.

Currently, Republicans / rightwingers are tying themselves up in knots trying to defend a new Florida Black History curriculum which includes (amongst the expected condemnation of slavery) the fact that some slaves "developed skills which could be applied for their personal benefit", and then goes on to list (incorrectly) a number of successful African Americans who allegedly could attribute their post slavery success to the "skills" they learned while enslaved (turns out that everyone on their list was free born, not that that is particularly relevant here, wouldn't have made any difference if they had been born into slavery).

And then a Fox news host, when pressed by his Jewish co-host to understand how offensive that logic would be if applied to the Holocaust, barefacedly tried to extend the same logic, egregiously misquoting a Jewish survivor's observation about the fact that some prisoners were able to avoid death by making themselves "useful", to suggest that the prisoners' desperate battles for survival through utility was, somehow, an upside of their imprisonment and torture.

There was the time when only the most rabid extremists would dare to spout that sort of equivocating bullsh1t, and it would be the end of them, but this stuff is being said right out there in the open, on mainstream media, and by a major political party.

What the fvck is happening there?  Have they all lost their collective minds?

Based on recent evidence people like risky and amithemeatshield will be airing these sorts of opinions very soon as will the GBeebies more wacky presenters like Mogg and that bearded antivaxer nutcase.

It’s what happens when you paint yourself into an ideological corner

we had the same with all the people on here who told that there would never be a covid vaccine, they tied themselves up in the most astonishing knots

What the fvck is happening there?

Pause.

First, let's not get too "there"ish about it shall we?

I will tell you what's happening.  The fruit of a generational educational failing is ripening. A culture based on condemnation and judgement, opinion and sentiment over quiet reason, an "it must be said" vogue, a belief that spouting things is more important than listening and understanding things, a cult of personality and fame, the payment of great sums to people who have no intrinsic value but media and communities consider them to be "of the moment" over societal values, the betrayal of past generations who have suffered for those values, a general acquiescence to the gradual decay of principle and substance, a careless disregard for the pricelessness of democracy, responsibility, respect, patience, tolerance, understanding, learning, education, deference, veneration of others, an indiffernce to hate, a failure (collective and individual) to stand up to the erosion of values in society, a selfish focus on simple measures of success including material wealth and renown over contribution and modesty.  A failure and refusal to call out wrong.  These things are what is happening. There and everywhere else.

These attitudes soon make their way over the Atlantic. Was reading something the other day about some yank alt-right nutjob saying feminism has caused more deaths than atomic bombs.

I accept that chambers but I also acknowledge that Berlin was chock full of liberal, educated wise persons who said over a glass or two of their favourite tipple "what on earth is Mr Hitler on about - it's an affront to our ways of being - he does not speak for me, I can assure you" then they chattered on until they were persuaded otherwise or liquidated or died in air raids while reading their improving literature, indifferent to the plight of others.

It seems the alt right whingers like risky and trump and Tories realise they are losing power so instead of, you know, being sensible and following the voters, the are doubling down in a desperate hope to solidify the base

Awful stuff

It goes back to the fact that the US is really two countries if not more populated by people who see things very differently.  The good old boys in the south who owe their wealth to slavery  have spent years trying to paint their ancestors as being good people who just did what everyone else was doing and who unlike others helped their slaves, etc. because none of them want to admit that great uncle Woodrow was an ocean going racist bastard.

"Was reading something the other day about some yank alt-right nutjob saying feminism has caused more deaths than atomic bombs."

Gosh, I don't even want to get started on the anti-feminist insanity... Half witted morons like Pearl Davis et al, and slightly more intelligent (but no less venal) gobsh1tes like Candace Owens (who apparently gets a pass on saying deeply offensive stuff because she is mixed race) whose default position is that women are stupid, duplicitous, untrustworthy, incapable, and should probably not be let out unsupervised, all the way to the new and increasingly breed of idiots who espouse the whole "surrendered women" bullsh1t.

The world is in so much trouble right now.

I spend a reasonable amount of time there for work, or to see family and friends, but I am getting increasingly uncomfortable about going there on account of its increasing fvckedupness.

It can be a truly odd place.  Like you, Cru, I am somewhat compelled to spend time there usually in and around DC for work.  And to see family and some friends when in town.  My sister's other half is from the Caribbean and their kids are mixed race.  Some of the things they have to think about (principally where to live and raise their children to mitigate targeting/profiling whilst still having access to good schooling) is pretty sickening when I think about it too much.  They live in a a very nice community on the East Coast but the mixed population is under 5% .....  I dread them having "the talk" re police.

America has always been about othering.  The indigenous v settlers. Then Revolution.  Then the description of non whites as less than. Then with large scale immigration Irish vs the Italians vs the xxxx vs the xxxx vs etc.  So this latest factionalism is simply a new iteration as it perceives itself becoming a white minority country (not really true other than the ridiculous "one drop" concept which we know is bs (albeit a better write up can be found here https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/mixed/onedrop… ).  Far less a white church going minority.

We are already talking about them leaving the US when he gets to prep school age or a little before to fit in with the IB by moving to southern Africa.

Tufton St et al are a national security threat acting as an insidious bridgehead for such cant in the UK.

What fence coal said in terms of ideological painting into a corner. It's an unusual place in that there seems to be desperation to 'support' one of the two political teams not only blindly, but in demonstrating your allegiance by advocating ever more extreme views.

That said much as I don't particularly like many things there, I generally find Americans in the US to be incredibly friendly and open. Was in a semi-rural dive bar in Florida recently and the parking lot was full of Trump and Jesus stickers. People inside were lovely and all wanted to chat. Welcoming, engaging and the barmaid even paid for a TV subscription so I could watch the English football.
